I think I have a problem due to rapid system restarts, resulting in files on the hard drive to become messed up. when turning the system on, i get the following message: ok. I cant boot into windows. Ill have to do a reinstall.. I do the normal skip recovery console and go to installing xp. I go ahead and except the license and see the screen with the list of partitions. XP is seen, but the option for "r" or repair is not there, only a clean install. My guess is that the option is not there because the system 32 file not there and therefore the installer does not recognize windows. as it stands right now all i see is: Any idea on where to go from here?
I do believe you can use the recovery console on the xp cd and perform a chkdsk /r /p this should solve the problem for you.. If not a full clean install could be on the table.
pressing R at the xp setup screen puts you in the recovery console, it sounds like that option is not available for some reason...it should be, it's a part of the OEM software, so I don't see why anybody would want to strip it out in their build..... If you do the first option and just install windows on the current partition, it will essentially be a reinstall, you'll need to reinstall all your apps though as I believe it wipes the registry when you do a reinstall
Isn't the repair option on the first page of the win xp setup? (I may be wrong but that is what I remember)
there is a recovery option on there but no repair. I think win ssetup will only show this if it can read the registery, and so if it corrupts, your busted.
As said above, use the recovery console in recovery mode when booting off your XP CD to run the command "chkdsk /r /p" Try that before you go reinstalling.
