I want to be a linux GOD! I have just managed to install madrake version 9 and I really like the look of this! I wanna know more! first thing I wanna do is attempt to connect to the internet!! god knows how! Can anyone recommend any little things I can try out on mandrake to get use to the layout etc!
Tips for a linux newbie: 1. Get used to the command line. You will NOT be a linux god without command line knowledge 2. understand how to compile programs from source 3. Learn to use google web/newsgroup search. It will aid you a lot. 4. Don't ask questions in newsgroups or anything until it is a last resort. Some of the old Linux users get annnoyed with this. Then again it's all part of being a newb. 5. http://www.tlpd.org has lots of good Linux HOWTO's and guides. If you do ask newb questions often people will point you here. 6. RTFM! hehe type 'man program name'(generally) on the command line to find out information on a linux program
if u have adsl or cable trust me its not that hard just choose auto detect in setup it worked for me and when ever i change from windows to linux i dont have to restart the modem for new ip and wether im on linux or windows same ip sow hen i run my ftp server its always the same
I've also just booted into linux for the first time. And it reminds me when I first switched on a windows PC the feeling of exicement and wantting to learn more.
i remember when cable came out back in the days of redhat 4.2...anyways, cable modems just came out, and i was all excited, but id be damned if i knew how to configure it, 2 months later i installed win2k (latest at the time) and grew away from linux until now anyways, back on topic, im using slack8.1, not sure about your redhat version, but try booting off the cd and run a configure or setup command...in the slack8.1 cd u do that and it wuto detects ur NIC, and eth connection, auto configures to whatever you want, i chose DHCP as it was easiest, bang, im online, see if ur cd has those options
How are you looking to connect the Mandrake box to the 'net? Dialup or ethernet or wireless or what? Ethernet/cable/dsl you should be able to use drakconf (i think thats what mandrake calls it i could be wrong), and there should still be a netconfig command that you can use from the CLI to set up your network connection (unless they've decided to depreciate the command and make it go away). Now via a dialup i never tried that with any version of Mandrake.
Connection? I agree with dakar, what kind of conection do you have? I have cable and as soon as I put Red Hat 9 on, it worked the first time! Don't ask about Dial - Up, I don't know, I got cable before I installed Linux!
