I have just had Sky BB setup and one thing I didn't think of when deciding on ISP's was a static IP address. I used to have one with BE but there is no option with Sky.

I work from home a bit and I use a VPN to do remote Admin on servers which requires an IP address for the VPN. Obviously I can't do this now as it would require a firewall change on the work firewall every time I change IP address.

So are there any options available to me?

I would prefer not to have to install a client (ie no-ip) if at all possible.

Call your ISP, for a fee they usually can set a static IP.

Some routers have the ability to communicate with a site like no-ip on your behalf so no nasty client to install.

I was about to say the Sky router has a built in client for dyndns (you just have to set it up in the routers web interface) but alas it doesn't sound like that'd be much use to you :(

Whats the ip for, in most cases you can enter the DNS and let the internet work it out for you.

The word is, Sky don't do static, so you may need to change ISP to somebody who will.

Check out how the dyndns thing works, written by another Sky user.

The importance of this will also depend on just how much your IP changes. My ISP only does 'dynamic' addresses despite the fact that mine hasn't changed in two years.

before changing to static IP consider the benefits of dynamic. Higher anonimity, non perment bans and quite alot of random internet problems resolving with a modem reboot. I have used no-ip in the past as they have a linux client and they are quite reliable, if you need an ip you could always just look at the ip the domain name is pointing to :)

Should work the same way really? Just put the url in instead of an ip. Dyndns does the same as no-ip basically but without the client:/. I can't think of any other way you could do it.
