My brother in law gave me his old 360 to look at and it seems its the dvd as it literally does nothing, doesn't spin up, open close or anything.

Putting a new one in seems unlikely as apparently they are linked to the motherboard.

You can swap the control pcb over but if the drive is literally doing nothing I feel it might be the board to blame.

I considered using it as an online only console but it wont even update as it keeps throwing errors.

The power button light was blanking fast green but I have put a jumper on the correct power pins and that has stopped.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Oh God I dealt with a lot of dead 360s as a teenager at Currys.
1st option: If the console will boot to dashboard but won't update/play games try clearing the console's cache several times, then trying to update again.

2nd option: It may be that the firmware is corrupted and needs to be re-installed. With the aid of Google that's an error code for update 17559, you can try re-installing it via a usb drive. It might be that the DVD drive is fine and the thing just isn't booting properly.

3rd option: If the DVD drive is bricked you can fit replacement drives, but you have to change the new drive's DVDkey to match the console. This one's fun stuff.

If it's an early not-slim model 360 you may (repeat, may) be able to replace the drive with one of the same model and just have it work. That only seems to work for the very earliest 360s.

If it's none of those things then I'm stumped, definitely try option 1 first.

I have done the clearing the cache a few times while trying different HDD's but it hasn't helped, I have just downloaded the update though and just need to locate an empty stick to put it on.

    Thanks

Formatted a 16gb stick, copied the files onto the stick and inserted it into the xbox.

Let it boot and it seems to find the stick and files ok as it requests the update straight away and tries to extract but falls over with the same error again.

Tried it with the dvd drive connected and with the 2 pins on the power connector jumped.

Time for an RGH freestyle 360 then? They dont need working drives...

There may be working usb hacks these days for them but i havent touched them in a few years now.
