I was doing a firmware upgrade on my unlocked 'phone and forgot to virginise before I did the upgrade. I've now got a jailbroken phone that won't accept any SIM cards. Instead, I'm getting the "incorrect SIM" error. :(

I managed to get back to 1.0.2 to re-flash the 1.0.2 baseband firmware and then virginise before trying the upgrade again, but it looks like the initial move to 1.1.1 has basically bricked the modem.

On the bright side, WiFi/iPod/Photos/Calendar/Contacts/etc still work though... so I guess it's not a complete brick - it's just not a phone at the moment. Any ideas?

In the meantime, it's back to Windows Mobile I go... :wallbash:

Go to 1.1.3 then downgrade to 1.1.1, unlock the phone, then go to 1.1.2 with the prep tool. There is a method for unlocking 1.1.3 from 1.1.2 but it's not for me.

iPhoneSIMfree appears to be working... just unlocking as I type.

falls at the last hurdle... it's unlocked but it's not activating itself so that I can pick up a carrier signal. :(

It's the baseband that's screwed... the phone is running firmware 1.1.3 and the 1.1.3 baseband. It's unlocked and I've jailbroken it so I can use everything but the GSM functionality. No matter how many times I flash the baseband, it's not getting better. :blah:

I've been on 1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 multiple times in the last 24 hours and the baseband firmware is definitely fubared... I get the same problems regardless of which firmware I'm running.

They were saying that 1.1.3 was de-bricking a lot of people's phones... so no luck? You could always just try exchanging it telling them that it broke with a firmware update, and forget to mention it was unlocked.

Ask in a forums where everyone knows a fair bit about this iPhone situation, by the sounds of things, the iPhone cannot be totally bricked.

I was under the impression that the iphones were able to be saved no matter how badly bricked they were?

Hope you get it back anyway.
Roll-on the iPhone equivalent that's not locked to itunes/o2 etc. :)

dunno if it'll work, but restore it to factory unless you told iTunes to do a full reset.

But firmware won't "reset" will it? Might be wrong.

AFAIK the French iPhones are unlocked because of French legal requirements. What would happen if you used the French firmware?

    Just a suggestion.

They're all the same firmware. The unlocking with the French iPhones is done through iTunes if you pay extra (at which point your phone's serial number is sent off to some database in Apple so iTunes knows to unlock it upon activating). Unless Tim can get his phone's serial number in that database...

Have you tried switching to 1.0.2 and re-virginising it? Once you do that, you just jailbreak it from 1.0.2, upgrade to 1.1.1, jailbreak, unlock, and upgrade to 1.1.3 + jailbreak, the unlock will stay.

Add source: http://i.unlock.no/ to installer to be able to virginise your 1.0.2 phone to the original baseband.

I followed this guide to go from 1.0.2 to 1.1.3 with mine:
