    OMG!!!!

I just bought a new 6150-430 gigabyte mobo from newegg.. (X2 CPU, 7800gtx, 3 gigs patriot ram, the works,)

I couldn't get it to display anything on any of the monitors I tried,
so after rebuilding it 3 times, I noticed that this time I had left the +12v plug undone, (just this time, It was in the earlier times)

so in my anger/stupidity, I plugged it in while the PSU WAS POWERED UP.
    Sparks. the PSU powers down.
    Curse, swear, more cursing...

sweating, I hit the power button.

IT WORKS!!!! I get a post, and am currently half way through installing XP.

the only bad part is I can't get the #@*(%&#$ OCZ memory booster to fit into the ram slot, either a capacitor or another mem module is in the way.
oh well... major RMA averted. Mission Acomplished.

So I would assume Otaku wanted to get the most possible RAM, yet still use the booster. :D

Nice job though. *shivers* While it was on? I would be afraid of shocking myself! And that lightbulb would be lit by the electricity! :D Anyways, good job on getting the mobo working.

    *Edit* Hah! Beat Firehed!

I'd imagine it has something to do with the memory voltage booster. Bit silly as a lot of mobos go up to 3.2v now and you can't overclock too far with that much ram anyways, so you might as well go all the way and make 32-bit processing your limiting factor.

but I'm not using a built-for-OCing mobo, it's really designed for media center PCs, (It's one of these babies)

I won't be taking it to college with me, (leave tommorow, have a lappy anyway) so setting up RAID, OC'ing, and modding the case will be a summer project.

I plan on having this system last me for quite a while, so I maxed it out as much as I could for the budget.

EDIT: because I can't fit in the RAM booster, I might just sell off a module and go dual channel... we'll have to see.

All the better to open all the possible pr0n sites without ever having the close a window, and be able to alt-tab through 100s of them.

Or maybe he's just big on multitasking.

wow. this thread got dredged up...

anyway, if anyone cares as an update: the gigabyte mobo was a total lemon. I replaced it with an MSI version. works much better.

now It turns out my 7800GTX is wonky as well. :grr:

    it's a strange problem actually.

it runs HL2 just fine, lost coast has some wierd textures.

but it's wonky on everything else.

FEAR crashes from the get-go, so does doom 3 and a few others.

Quake 4 only crashes on the vehicle levels.

I think I musta static-fryed it while putting on a custom cooler.
    :wallbash:

    more money down the drain.
