there's some good games today. Fable (xbox), FEAR, Dark Messiah (for $20 bucks it's pretty good), CSS IMO is great and competetive gaming is fun at lans for prizes but not in CAL and ****. There's a few more but I can't remember. Hellgate: London holds alot of promise.

Fable was OK, but given what was promised its still a massive let down. Very restrictive. FEAR is ok for a run or two. Dark Messiah I like, though multiplayer sucks - needs coop really.

Hellgate: London looked good to me until I found out you needed to pay a subscription to get the most out of it. **** that.

Really? i didnt know that. ahh bugger it then.

What i think thats killing the industry is the franchises. such as games like Sims, EA sports and most importantly movie based games. All these are terrible and just make wanky games to earn a quick buck.
Also MMO's get a vote by me for not teaching the player anything and rapeing them for their cash and lives (yes im looking at you WoW).

The industry has become so interested as how we can make moneh as to what hasent been done before. True there are some company's that are trying such as Valve and others but even they have a limit as to how to make the moneh.

To be honest Joe your opinions on OOT are totally void given you can't pronounce the title correctly. *titter*

Anyway, on topic, personally I think alot is to do with the way games are made nowadays. Like big blockbuster movies verses small independent ones, the massive AAA titles are more about visual impact and short term gaming pleasure than real longevity and all the things that make them last through the ages. In the past, the gap between AAA and ZZZ titles wasn't as pronounced as it is now, I know you might say that the big AAA titles of the past were great and long lasting, but to be honest the AAA titesl of the past have more in common with the small releases of today. Hell by today's standards Doom 2 would have been a tiny independent release. I think there will be a resergence of grass roots games over the coming years, all digitally distributed, which won't be concerned with big bang production and more about the kind of gameplay that lasts throughout the ages. Too many AAA titles of today are concerned with being WOW, because of the advancements in technology and graphics, than actually producing good gameplay and narrative. In the same way some films are all about special effects, whilst others understand what really makes a movie that will last forever, games will go down the same route.

So....do we not have a swearfilter anymore? I've been self-censoring my posts for nothing, its clear no-one cares anymore. Or is it just mods that can swear freely? I thought this was a family forum.

    Same Here.

    Anyway

I could never get into Deus Ex. I would only get into it for the first 10 mins then loss interest. I still got the CD too since day of release although the giant cardboard box went in the bin. I dont get why they did the giant boxs in those days.

Sure, there were really bad games back in the day. But go play them. The difference between bad games today, and old bad games, is that the old bad games are just hilariously bad. They're so bad, they're fun to play!

Today's bad games, are just crap.

:idea:If the game buying public voted with their wallets a bit more wisely, we wouldn't see half as many dodgey titles about. I mean how many people pre-order a game based on some fancy CGI cutscenes or limited ingame footage. Granted the eye candy is very appealing, but without the benefit of having an overal knowledge of what the game contains it's literally a lottery ticket your buying. I've always waited to read a review of a game before making a purchase. I've never understood the mentality of "must be first to play/complete it". Makes no difference if I get to play it one week or one month after release, the experience will be the same. We need to start using our smarts if we have any hope of herding the developers into the area of game design that we would like.

That news broke long before I joined bit-tech.net, in the first week of this year. I thought it was common knowledge frankly, it was all over the news at the time and Penny Arcade even did a comic on it IIRC.

I wasn't trying to sound superior or anything, I just honestly thought that this was known by most people interested in the game. Since I haven't had a chance to do any hellgate news, I haven't mentioned it on the site. Not too big a problem as I see it though; if you're into the game then you either knew or could find out easily. If not, then you either knew or wouldn't care anyway.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellgate:_london

Suggest you check out the wikipedia stuff at least then, Doug. There's been a massive amount of coverage leaking out about it and Kotaku have covered everything about it from trailers to the Hellgate: London advertising car fleet...

The game had dropped off my radar completely until the latest trailers. It doesn't get much coverage.

Apologies on that, as I wasn't aware the swear filter had been disabled.
