    So here's how it goes....

I wanted to mod my logitech mx700 wireless mouse. So I went to radio shack and got a bl00 led. For some reason I couldn't get my liquid solder to solidfy (sp?).
Out of much frustration I kept trying to get it to work with out solder and just heatsink. But, ofcourse my heatsink was a little too big and wouldn't hold it tight. Much heatsink and electrical tape later, I broke one of the legs off my led :wallbash: :waah:
So I got out a green LED (since I had cut off little pbc board the original LED is soldered to) and tried to use that instead. Still, I couldn't get it soldered, so I wrapped the wire around the legs of the led and used some heatsink.

I rebooted my machine and tried out my mouse...nothing. The green LED was on and my mouse was able to connect with it's base unit, but the cursor wouldn't move!!!!

If someone could help me, that would be great. Maybe I need to get some sticks of solder and try that next time? Meanwhile, I'm sutck with this little green one untill I go buy antoher blue one.

PS since i was uploading from my digi camera i decided to show a couple pics of my golden retriever, cody...

IS it A bright GREEN led? IT must be really bright for the mouse to detect the differences in the surface on which it's mousing.I think that's the problem or try a white blank A4 sheet to mouse on(can work).
And not every colour led works on the same surface I noticed by myzelf.

I've got a bright(3000MCD) blue led in my mouse which works perfect.

    p.s. WHY mod a MX700 it's so B-E-A-U-tiful by itself ;)
ANd your dog is strange ideed :eyebrow:

Don't throw out that mouse... You need a MUCH brighter LED to work that mouse... Plus the voltage of the green one is probably higher than the blue or red, and didn't even get enough to go fullbright... You need a 5000+ (or at lease 3000) mcd LED to get an optical mouse to work.

I was thinking that might be the prob. I don't know what kinda led it is cuz its just a spare one i have. the blue one i had was only 2700, i guess i need to spend the extra buck for the brighter one.

Yeh, the cheap blue LEDs from Radioshack need upwards of 3VDC [ thinkin 4.5 ].

    Oh, and they suck. :D

heatshrink != heatsink. Also I think you have passed so much heat to the PCB you have damaged something. You know that leds can only take something like 250degC for 3 -4 secs?

You should tin the tip of the soldering iron and then it takes like 2secs to solder...also make sure you got the good stuff, 40tin/60lead (these are dying out fast)....

Hope this helps. BTW I hate my MX700, might get an MX500, these batteries are pissin' me off!

If your gettin a wired mouse, go for a Mouseman DualOptical, pretty sweet mouse, plus 2 sensors to change to green or blue. I have put blue Leds in my own.

Hrm, if you still have the casing for your dead MX700, mind if I take that off your hands? :naughty:

I may or may not have lost the two side buttons to my MX500, and I'd rather find a replacement than rip apart my freshly cleaned room looking for them.

I've just modded my mx700 mouse... with the biggest soldier iron you can get...

Soldierd the led to the tiny pcb.. (damn that was hard)

I used a 3000mcd blue led... took me about 2hr to finish it..

scared me when the mouse did'nt work, on my black mousemat..
after a time with crying over my loss, I used my mind and tryed on a white a4 paper.. worked like never before...

PS: your dog also is like that? Mine too!

make sure you have a good soldering iron, if it is a 15 watt one good luck ever soldering anything but the smallest components, you need at leased 25 watts from my experiance. i use a 30wat iron.

80W Is way to powerful for (normal) electrical items... not surprised you almost killed the mouse

Thats what i was going to say, unless it is temperature controlled no electrical circut can like that much heat, that is unless you have mongoose like speed when using it.

    hey!

a quick question for those who've opened up their mx700s....

is the weight just the batteries and the circuit? i was just wondering cos i know sometimes wired optical mice have weights in them to bulk them up a bit, and this mouse does seem very heavy.

    thanks.

The mx500 I have isnt that light so I guess its not just the batteries.

By the way all of you with mx series mice thinking "I wonder how bright my led is", DONT LOOK, I can assure you its bright

The batteries are the weight. That, and there's like.. a couple of grams from all the extra circuitry involved.

The MX500 [ and prolly the MX300 too ] have a weight that sits to the rear of the "hump" of the mouse. Between the highest poit and where the tail would be, if it were a real mouse and you poked it in the eye to click.
