i don't know if they salt roads during the winter in uk, but in michigan they do. i never thought i'd get so much rust in 3-years, but in the end i'll be better off.

here's my page showing my progress on restoring my toy:

Yep, they salt the roads over here. Always makes me cringe when you overtake a spreading lorry as it does it's stuff, and you hear the rocksolt ping across the body work.

911 Worklog - Nice - look forward to updates.

Nice shade of green, BTW... :thumb:

Can someone explain to me why that in Birminham they don't salt the ENTIRE road.. I remember driving into Brummy a couple of christmases ago and overtaking was impossible because of the mound of snow in the middle of each lane!

i hate when they salt the roads like they do. a little thin coat is enough to keep my truck on the road. i hate when they put so much on that i have to scrape the salt out from the underside of my truck before it rusts everything away.

not everyone drives a large truck with lots of traction.. and the more grit, the more snow it will melt which lands on top of it after its been laid... when me and MrDT drove back from the Nottingham bit-meet we hit snow @ Stoke-On-Trent and there was LOADS of grit on the road... I suppose its the bikers who are in most danger on snow roads.

The slaty roads don't effect most of my car - the only thing that isn't galvanised or covered in 5mm of PVC underseal, is the exhaust. It's rotting away anyway, so there's no particular problem.

You should go to a car-wash and order a flushing of the underside of the car. Not sure if all car-washes has that function, but some do.

i would perfer if they just put a little salt down. that way if snow does start to pile up on the roads i can just plow it away. :D . i feel that everyone except old people and women drivers should have a truck and a car. the car for the summer and a truck for the winter. gas prices are lower in the winter so it wouldnt make a difference ecnomicly.

samellis, just wait till the rust starts on your Rover. Once they start you can see it rusting in front of your eyes. Usually the sills and then the bottom of the doors, and then the leading edge of the bonnet. Then the bottom rusts out of the radiator.

Yep, been there done that, and sold a slightly corroded '95 Rover 414.

good to see many bt members enjoying and supporting my 911 log. i'm very close to completing the necessary orders to start my interior, so i expect to add some of the first assembly photos soon. sorry i've gotten lazy about detailing the work log, but i'm more interested in driving kermy rather than writing about her. :)

penski, what do you mean by "clapped out" (sorry, not familiar with the slang). do yo mean the RS is unreversibly modified from original? that would be worthy of jailtime, or at least community service.

samuelellis and HellDiver, it's the rust you can't see that bites the hardest. thankfully most buyers don't know much about hidden rust, especially in california.;)

salted roads are the business, aren't they? i should've conceded and bought a disposable ford or chevy truck to get around while i was in MI. i was raised in cali, so i never really knew what fair weather or salt free roads were about until i moved back from 3 years in MI. most californians are clueless as to how lucky they are to drive 30+ year old cars without a spot of rust (less water in their oil too). in cali, a typical chassis can go through 400k mi and 3 powertrains without issue. in mi, it's the other way around; most rust buckets headed for the crusher have only 100k mi or so on an original motor.

i believe amercan automakers make short lived powertrains to match the expected life of their chassis when used on salty roads. also, from the looks of the pathetic undercoating on my '03 Acura TLS, the japanese don't know salty roads (so the TL won't be seeing salty roads, at least if i can help it). these are good reasons to buy european (you gotta love porsche undercoating over galvanized steel).

Clapped out - the previous owner had completely ran it into the ground...It needs a total rebuild.

    Nice car though.

Can't wait to see it once it's been redone.

I would prefer it if they could salt on those days when there's a thin layer of ice (frozen rain). It's just stupid to salt the roads when there's a thick layer of snow. Then you just get tracks in the road.
Last year I had to ride my bike on a salted road all winter to school. The result was that the gear system and stuff started to rust. (Fixed it now, though).

As I said, my Vauxhall Astra (Vauxhall is the UK's GM brand, same as Opel in Europe and Holden in Australia) has a galvanised body and floorpan, which is then painted with anti-chip paint, and then had a 4-5mm layer of PVC goop sprayed on. It really is almost indestructable.

Which reminds me, I must get the underseal patched on my car - I had an incident with a very high kerb which tore a lump out of the PVC coating...
