I'm all confused about which one to buy so recommend me a desktop replacement laptop. It must have a 17" wide screen, thin and semi-portable (even I know all 17” lappys are heavy ;)).

It's also for work so the gfx chipset dosn't need to be super.

    No PowerBooks though.

Oh i've also been looking at the HP Pavilion zd8000 but it's huge, heavy (12-pound :eeek:) and loud.

LMAo - well you just want the whole world I guess. I mean seriously, I think if you REALLY want a desktop replacement, you just have to get over the whole portability thing.

Of course, it depends on the desktop you are trying to replace - but my notebook is at least 9lbs, but maybe its 12lbs - if i really cared, i wouldn't have gotten a desktop replacement.

OK - sorry, let me try to be helpful. The last time I looked - these guys had, by far, the best price/performance ratio for high powered notebooks. Well, that might not be too difficult because their main competitor is probably AlienWare. Oh, but I don't know anyone who has bought or used them so I can't vouche for their reliability.

I will be carrying it occasionally but to be honest the weight doesn’t bother me, well not after seeing the weight of the Acer 17” laptop (15+lbs).

Looks like I’ll get the ZD8000, I can get the top of range one for £1100 anyway so it works out nice and cheap.

Somewhat bizarrely you can’t get the WSXGA+ screen or a fast HD (4200 rpm sucks) in the UK though which is a bit of a pisser.

I could always upgrade it :naughty:

When i was looking for a notebook (before i decided not to get one ^_^) i was looking at pctorque.com, Sager is a VERY good company, and there laptops are absolutely beautifull. Head on over to notebookforums.com and you'll find a bunch of reviews on all there models.

Oh I’m also replacing a 12.1" ultra portable lappy I could just throw in my briefcase.

I'm just going from one extreme to another ;)

The Dell is interesting but to configure it to equal the specs of the HP Pavilion zd8000 that HP want to sell me works out quite expensive.

Sod it I think I’ll just get the zd8000 (there’s lots of blue lights!!). The final spec comes out as follows…

    CPU: 3.4 P4 550 (apparently it’s a Prescott with the 64 bit extensions enabled)
    MEM: 1Gb
    HD: 100GB (4200rpm SUCKS!)
WIRELESS: Wireless LAN 802.11b/g & Bluetooth
    VGA: Radeon X600 256Mb
    SCREEN: 17" WXGA+

Why HP UK doesn’t do the higher res screens is beyond me but then you can’t argue for the price I’m going to pay.

Cant you get a 2GHz P-M?? Itll be faster than the P4 and will actually have a battery life above nanoseconds. And you want a Prescott in a laptop? Be prepared to buy a ceramic plate to put it on..

Also, havent they started shipping the new P-Ms and chipsets with Dual DDR2 support?? Back in Jan they launched them iirc.

What's wrong with a Powerbook? Does it have to be WinOS based? suckeh tbh :/

Dare i say it.. Alienware? Voodoo..one?

I would have loved a 2GHz P-M over a Prescott but its finding one with a 17" screen for a half acceptable price, Dells look acceptable but become grossly overpriced when you configure them properly. That and I really hate the design of the new Dell's with there "lets make everything white because it will look like an iPod" fever.

Ah yes heat the major sticking point, apparently with the zd8000 (and this comes straight from the HP rep) the keyboard actually gets hot, not warm but hot. :eeek:

Didn’t think of Alienware etc, I’ll have a look now :wallbash: :naughty:

I'm sorry Kevo, but if you're spending some decent money on a laptop which you'll probably want to last a while, consider the IBM T42p. They're utterly bulletproof, seriously. :)

Decided not to get the HP, and ordered this instead.....

The Asus V6000! Granted no 17" widescreen or any widescreen for that matter but I dont care because its soooo thin. :eeek:

    Final Spec:
    • Intel Pentium-M 740 1.73GHz (533MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache) Processor with Intel Centrino technology
    • 512MB DDR II
    • 60GB Hard Drive (5400 rpm getting better ;))
    • 15" SXGA+ TFT Display
    • ATI Mobility Radeon X600 64MB PCI Express graphics

I'm going to gut the thing when I get it and replace the HD, CPU (2GHz or better) and memory (2Gb) :thumb:

Niiiiiiiiiiiice. Who pays for the upgrades :eeek: 2GHz centrino alone is a fair £££. You got a good job?? Or your job pays, right?

2.5cm thick! and even has "ZBD" tech (or no deal pixel policy).

915PM, so see if you can get some gig sticks? Might be hard to find though.

See if you can change the gfx too - the PCIe should be a standard format so you could get away with an x800 in it :naughty:

You stick a 7200rpm drive in something that thin and itll vibrate itself off the table though.

    Wow, nice find :thumb:

I’m an IT manager* so yea I’m not paying for a thing, all the higher ups (inc me :D)) get new laptops every year for some reason. I just get to pick mine and it’s upgrades :naughty:

Don’t know about the HD and ram, but I am going to stick a new CPU in it.

As for the GFX card well there’s good news and bad, the good is that it apparently can be changed with ease like the CPU but it doesn’t use a standard connector and uses some sort of Asus thing. So unless Asus release updated gfx boards into the OEM market I won’t be upgrading that part any time soon.

That and I’m sure the cooling system would struggle with anything more than its already got.

    * (this is why you got a legal and proper copy of a certain OS) :naughty:

Due to an ordering "miss-under-standing" I won’t be getting the Asus anymore :waah:

But I will be getting the top of the range HP nx8220 instead, which is pritty cool with some impressive specs.

    Intel Pentium-M 740 2GHz (533MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache) Processor with Intel Centrino technology
    1Gb DDR II (533Mhz wooo!)
    80GB Hard Drive (5400 rpm)
    15.4" WSXGA+ TFT Display (1680 x 1050)
ATI Mobility Radeon X600 128MB PCI Express graphics
    & a serial port! :thumb:

Granted is don't look as good but at least it all black.
