so you wanna start out with dedicated/colocated? that doesn't seem like a good move...

I'd start out with a reseller account and as your customer base gets larger, move to dedicated

    reseller:
http://fuitadnet.com/ <- know a few people who use it, and I have a little (50MB) space on one of their servers, it's nice for beginners, etc

    dedicated:
http://theplanet.com/ <- what bit uses, so it must be good

theplanet.com is amazing.... if you want to start a hosting company, make sure your server is hosted here. Quality servers, fire supression system, multiple power backups, armed gaurd, and a ton more! my server has been hitting 100% uptime for the past few months. hope this helps...

so you have a server already? then colocate it and install some cpanel-esque software on it

if not, you wouldn't get many customers if you used someone's regular hosting package.. and you wouldn't be able to monitor bandwidth usage, and for example, most hosting packages have max of like 5 mysql databases, so some of your customers wouldn't get one, or have to double-up, or something silly like that

you have to put some cash up for reseller or dedicated if you want any customers

Problem with colocation (I looked into it for my mini-company) is that it's bloody expencive if you're just starting out. Bandwidth costs an arm and a leg, plus you're responcible for every darn peice of hardware and often the facility doesn't give a crap if anything goes wrong on your end...

A good place to look for hosting is the HostHideout forum. You can't really tell which company is the most reliable, but people offer you special deals so you can get your hosting very cheap.
