either that or i am. the year is 2002.. i need an upgrade from my cyrex 200mhz. Computer Phase One: AXP 1800+ Soyo K7-v dragon 2 mobo 512 of some ram winfast geforce 2 Ti 64mb Maxtor 60GB Generic case w/ power supply Everybodies happy, until im formatting windows one day and the cheap CPU fan [bought for <£5] fails and my pc cooks itself while im outside. Im in the middle of trying to repair things but while im at school my dad takes the computer to some guy to fix it.. This some guy insists we need a new mobo new cpu, which my dad okays, so computer phase two: AXP 2400+ better cpu heatsink n fan some Jetway motherboard? same 512 ram Maxtor 60gb Samsung 120gb i had bought pre-death same generic case w/ psu Same location in the house.. Give it a year and xp needs a reformat, we dont have a copy - thought we would take it to him and have him reinstall xp Then i get a call and he tells me that both hard drives are dead and hes given us a new drive w/ windows on so i insist he give us the dead drives. I check them, theyre both dead [both make a loud CLICK CLICK CLICK sound and wont boot wont be detected..] so ok.. lets RMA.. Computer Phase 3 AXP 2400+ same Jetway motherboard same 512 ram Maxtor 120gb Radeon 9600 PRO 256 mb bought to make me feel better same generic case w/ psu Same location in the house.. Half a year later, my pc wont boot - loud CLICK CLICK CLICK from the drive... many headbangs and an RMA later, new 120gb drive.. then, it hadnt been five months, and the 120gb drive fails, same problem. ok, somethings not right here.. . .. .. after a night on scan.co.uk, computer phase four: AXP 2400+ Abit NF7-s v2.0 same 512 RAM Seagate 160gb SATA Radeon 9600 pro Tagan 380w PSU same generic case Same location in the house.. finally some peace? nah. . only 4 months later hard drive has bad sectors in the windows directory and i reformat... ok.. it happens.. 2 weeks after my reformat cdrw and dvd drive arent detected in windows, im about to copy drivers over in dos but then the hard drive fails.. this time its just not detected in BIOS anymore and i get 'DISK READ ERROR' cdrw and dvd drives have come and gone throught this time, so the only thing that has remained the same and killed me as well as so many components in the space of 3 years is: The case The RAM The Location in the house... Any ideas? Im in padded room 14 if anyone wants to reach me directly.. Thanks very much.
Well, although its the same RAM, I doubt that is causing problems. I'm wondering whether its your location, it seems to be your HDDs all the time. Do you live near some huge electircal interferance like a mast near your house, or a transformer outside the house, a power station, huger leccy pylons, military satellite dish or whatever? *As I said before, I think you are cursed nonetheless!
see thats your problem. its a commonly known fault with most PC's that once your dad gets hold of it then the PC is buggered for ever.
lmao, how did i miss that - my dad has been in close proximity to the comp a lot.. No.. no transformers/masts near the house
You could have some power issues in your house. Minor changes in supply voltages can play havoc with computer components, usually hard drives are the first to go ! Have you got a surge protector or power smoother? These can be quite cheap ( <£30) but are worth every penny. If you really want to blow some cash you could get a UPS, which has the same effect (and also provides power in the event of a power cut for a short time) I see you've even tried a new PSU, and the RAM and case are not going to be causing these problems...
I usually use a surge protector and have a multisocket with power overload meter thing.. MrWillyWonka... . what do you mean by electrical interferance? cause i think i have found the cause, but im not sure so dont let this bias ur thinking.. Asked my dad if there were any transformers near the house etc and he asked why so i said cause someone suggests theres electrical interferance. Now hes come up to me and remmebered that we have a pest repeller thing plugged into the kitchen socket - (it does ultrasound but also sends Electromagnetic pulses around the house circuitry incase any pests are in teh floorboards etc.. cause apparently that scares them away?] Heres the beautiful part - weve had it for about 3 years.
Yoo hoo, electromagnetic interferance is likely to be the cause, which is why you should never put a hoover near a computer, likewise this insect repller may have costed you a fair amount of money.
As correct as that sounds, according to 'Them' - "these devices will not affect your computer.." Should leave it unplugged and see if my troubles are over.. . .
Turn them off and wait a year and see if you have problems. :S I wonder if you can get a device which tells you the amount of EMI there is in the surroundings? Might want to ask someone in the electronics forum.
I was just thinking the same thing. Thanx for the help, i now have some RMAing to do - take care all.
