I too will be coming upto a year in my first IT job in March, I currently and 2nd Line Local support, where my main roles are Hardware fixes on the Lenovo Laptops we use, or any software fixes that the helpdesk cant do remotely and that don't need one of the 3rd Line teams to do.

My Company paid for me to do A+ when I first started, And even though most seem to regard this as a pointless qualification as it is a very simple one, the cost of it is not huge and as some have said Qualifications do help get jobs, esp ones like A+ that mean the same anywhere. Maybe look at the job adverts and see what qualifications they are requiring and if A+ isn't that common don't bother with it.

Experience is also important and by being in the industry already that will help massively, before I got this job every job I applied for wasn't interested, Not because I had no qualifications but because I did not have any experience.

ITIL is an exam I have heard about but not one I have done. When looking for jobs I saw most were asking for you to have this so It might be worth getting that one.

Other certs are people have said the Win 7 certs should be worth it possibly windows 8 but I am not sure what the uptake on win 8 will be by most companies, I don't think our desktop team have a windows 8 build yet all our stuff is 7

    I did:
    CompTIA A+

Landed a job first line at local MSP. (£17k)

    Continued on my own with:
    CompTIA N+
    MCTS: Windows 7
MCITP: Windows 7 Enterprise Desktop Support
MCTS: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Deployment

Moved to 2nd/3rd support and server deployments 6 months later. (£21k)
Did a few ZyXEL certs on the side (Kit we where pushing at the time)

Stayed there for 2 years and then was approached for my current job. (£28k)

Certs certainty came into play in the interview as well as my experience and made me the first choice out of 12 others.
Just ticked over a year now in the new role and enterprise IT is much more fun :) Shiny new toys daily.

Not sure how relevant my Quals are but MCDST, MCSA and MCSE at the good ol time of Windows XP got me the grand sum of Jack even though I now work where I could very well make good use of them and the only use I could fathom relevant in my job role currently is status for the company however none of these quals were are even mentioned so the points raised here are hold little value.

The problem with IT is that I have found in a good number of cases it is sometimes not what you know (although knowing a fair amount and having experience to begin with is key to breaching the gate house) but who you know and if your even remotely competent they will be happy to consider employment given they can mould you to how they see fit and train accordingly.

Well it's been a while since I stopped by but I'm really glad to see my advice carried on helping.

To these comments I'd refer back to my earlier bit:

Back then, Microsoft partner status didn't mean very much.

These days, Microsoft will partner with you on customer deals and co-fund marketing exercises but only if you use their software stack end to end and only if you're Gold certified.

Also, you'll only get access to certain types of technical support if you're Gold certified.

Microsoft certs matter ... although only if your company is one that have decided to rely on it of course. My advice from page 1, way back in September 2013 stands I think is still relevant, although there's new Microsoft certs now which are actually relevant and helpful instead of just a piece of paper; they actually have a network exam which is not pants for example.

Is anyone looking for a position in IT in north Bristol area or nearby? We've got a few vacancies for second-line technical analysts, and a couple of third line Messaging and UC roles (if you have an MCSA in Messaging or UC with experience you're a shoe in).

Second line analyst roles are probably 22k - 28k depending on experience, third line roles will be 30 - 35k or upto 40k or maybe even more depending on experience.

We also have a senior network engineer role going, CCNP/multiple CCNP or CCIE with a healthy salary to go with it. I think they're advertising this one at 55k - 70k so that should give you an idea of how senior they're looking for.

Let me know via PM and I'll get your CV in the running if so, I get a referral fee, and you get to work for a company massively expanding and taking on some huge customers :)

    Hi guys,

Just a quick shout out to anyone who's looking to recruit a keen I.T professional at the moment :)?

I've completed 12 months in my first I.T role. I work supporting a Sharepoint based learning platform that also uses Office 365 and requires daily use of Active Directory.

I'm currently based in Harrow, north-west London but ideally looking to work in central, west or south-west London.

If anyone's interested then please let me know and I'll happily send my C.V over.

Wasted 4 years of my life doing computer science. could never get work from it and now i have just had the odd crappy job here and there. I now look after my partner as a carer on **** all money from the government.

never take advice from college's as they just want you to enroll on there **** course so they get money. Seek independent advice like here.
Distinction in computer science national diploma, pointless.
