ok heres whats gone down so far, looking for suggestions on next step or just confirming its dead.

monitor will not display any picture. managed to get it to flick on for about 0.2 sec then off again. last few attempts got nothing.

tried these things to get it to work:

    1) tried all 3 inputs, analog 1-2 and DVI.

    2) tried 3 different cables, DVI - DVI/VGA and VGA

    3) attempted this on 2 laptops and my desktop.

    4) switched power cable.

now when i switch input i can get a solid green light on display panel indicating im on the right input but nothing is displayed at all. When im on the wrong input it goes green then amber.

    any help appreciated

ooo monitor is a Viewsonic 171b and its about 5-6 years old.

    cheers

    Adam

Could be a dead main board or inverter.

Have you tried it on different computer?

Sounds like it's at death's door. If you're handy with a soldering iron, it should be easily repairable, I recall it's only a couple of components that need changing (I can't remember which though, sorry). Either that or get a new one.

hook it up in a dark room, as if anything is fine, and use a torch close to the screen to see if the panel is still active, if you can see icons, etc is the backlight thats gone.

If not then possible the panel has gone...

Note its not as easy as it sounds to get this trick to work so take your time.

The image will be quite faint to be put simply.

I just want to mention that I have fixed a few LCD's with similar issues as mentioned, and each time it has been slightly bulging capacitors that was the issue and not the backlight itself. A few minutes with a soldering iron and replacement caps and they have been fixed. Just because the bulb is not lighting does not mean that it itself is what is wrong; every time I've seen that issue it has been the capacitors on the board.
