Lucky bugger. I've spent literally my entire life learning higher and higher levels of understanding about just the english language - I've tried since and it's so ingrained I just can't learn anything else.

If you've got a knack for it then go crazy: Japanese or Esperanto!

<drops bra now> would have been more appropriate, nothing wrong with a bit of foreplay before going in.

Oh, and my vote goes for German, I only speak a bit, but once you learn the major rules it's easy to learn languages such as Dutch, Finnish & Meänkieli (swedish). they could come in useful in the Red Light district :D

grrr hate all you bi and multi lingual people. I can't even get a good grasp on french :(.

But if it were me i would pick something really obscure. Like an ancient or dead language or portugese.

    Lol.

So I suppose the general consensus is that if I intend to stay in Europe, then I should go German, and in the interest of the late future, Mandarin and Japanese are worthy challenges.

Well it just happens that I have come across a series of textbooks and MP3 files, for learning Japanese, called Genki, which I'll give a shot. Will leave feedback as to how it works out...

Please go to rosettastone.com/tv and buy this CRAP so this guy will quit with the loud commercials. DirectTV has him on almost all the channels with commercials I happen to haunt. Thank the Power and the Presence that I have the no commercial channels too.

Aside from a high mass in the Catholic church, it really is a useful language if you want to do anything in Biology or zoology. They tend to use Latin for names of STUFF!

One of my friends teaches English as a second language, mainly to Asian exchange students. She speaks fluent Mandarin, but doesn't like to admit to it to avoid alienating the other language groups in her classes - although she's surprised more than one student who's tried to sneak a nasty comment past in their own language!

    Edited to add:

I'm just waiting for a chance to quote that out of context...

    I speak Malay and English.

I'm thinking of picking up Mandarin so that I can confront the Sichuan Palace restaurant for passing off orange chicken as tangerine chicken. Wait. Where did that come from.

Try Genkijapan.net. I'm using it and it's well worth it.

There's a nice one to twenty lesson from them:

If you already know some German that may be the one to do next as it's not that hard a language to learn if you know English. Then probably Spanish and then Mandarin I reckon.

For some mental reason I started learning Icelandic a while back. Iceland is one of the few places I'd like to go to so it seemed to make sense. It's a weirdly fascinating language. They never take words from other languages, they make up new Icelandic ones instead. I should be doing Ancient Greek & Latin next year as part of my OU studies, I'd love to properly study Ogham at some point too. I spend an awful lot of my time at http://www.ancientscripts.com/

400,000 users in and around Ljouwert speaking a language can't be wrong. Put it on the list here. Good call.

I speak English and French, i should learn Spanish (for school) but i just hate it.
Learning a language in books is just un-useful for me :S.

French is my mother language, i learnt English by watching Cartoons, travelling and other stuffs. Not grabing a book and reading about it ;).
