There is an imminent upgrade within the next couple of days. I can get the 3570k for $60 off with select boards on newegg.com - http://promotions.newegg.com/Intel/13-1393/index.html in which I will probably grab the asrock. My friend is talking about the 2500k due to extreme OC headroom (he has his at 4.5 cont. with stable 5.0) What are the possibilities of the 3570k in reference to OC headroom? Benefits v.s. cons in buying one or the other? Also, the boards in the deal have VGA and DVI ports... As far as I knew integrated display ports were only when there were integrated graphics were present. As far as the details go it says onboard graphics only supported CPU with integrated graphics. Thought the boards had the integrated graphics? Or do the i5s have integrated graphics on their CPUs?
All the core i3, i5 and i7 have integrated graphics. No motherboard for any generation of those chips will have graphics in the chipset as it is in the CPU. The 3570 can be overclocked as much as the 2500 if you have adequate cooling, but as they tend to overheat at lower temps you will be more limited. However, as Ivy Bridge has approx 10% more IPC (instructions per clock cycle), you will get the same performance at a lower clock speed. For example, a 3570K at 4.5 GHz will be roughly the same speed as a 2500K at 5.0 GHz.
Debs is spot on with the CPU points. As for the ASRock, do you think you can spend the extra $20 and get the Gigabyte? I just say that because I've had some issues with my Z68 Extreme3. PCI slots died. On the other hand, I have an A75 mITX ASRock board that has performed flawlessly so far.
Yes Debs is right about the 3570k being slightly faster than the 2500k clock for clock. I personally would go for the 2500k as they run cooler when overclocked. Plus they're usually cheaper in price, particularly if you can pick one up secondhand.
what's the point of buying a soon to be 2 generations old CPU now? just get the 3570k the asrock extreme4 isn't particularly good if you're going to overclock, definitely get the gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD4H. it's a quality board. $320 for a 3570k and that motherboard is a great deal
They are all as good as one another these days to be honest. Personally though, between the an AS Rock and Gigabyte, I'd still go for the Gigabyte.
I personally went for a SB CPU 'cos it's less toasty, was cheaper, and (for me) was the best match for my Z68 Maximus board. The OC temps of IB really put me off!
Go for the gigabyte and the newer gen CPU. For comedy value check this oscar nominated performance by Hugo from Asrock showing off the Instant Boot tech they have. Skip to 2 minutes in for the side by side benchmark and Hugo! Hugo Rules!!!
I've got a Ivy Bridge CPU in my pc now which saw an upgrade from 2500k. I think it is worth it for PCIe3 tbh. As for temps(in centigrade), well; 4.7ghz 2500k topped out in late 60s. I'd seen early 70s. 3570k at 4.7ghz has seen early to late 80s. None of these temps are reproduced in gaming. 60s for the ivy bridge and late 40s sometimes early 50s for sandy. 2500k was cooled using a single 360x45mm rad (with gfx card in loop) and 3570k is cooled with 360x45 rad plus 120x45 rad (also with gfx card in the loop). At around 4.4//5ghz the speed of my 3570k was performing similarly to my 2500k. At 4.7ghz it trumps it easily in benchs and consumes less power still. Topping out 190watts in cinebench where as 2500k was just tipping 200watts. (these are whole system consumption results measured at the wall.) I plan to do IHS removal at some point soon which should knock of 10c at best.
I have the asrock extreme 4 its a good board. My i5 3750K is happily sitting at 4.5Ghz on 1.25V temps very low on idle and its got a nice BIOS aswell. Comes with some software for controlling fans as well.
