I just use small FFT as I underclock my RAM to eliminate it as an issue.

Congratulations - sounds like good progress. Looks like you will anyway, but I'd definitely steer clear of 1.4v. Running @ 1.23V and 3.8GHz is perfect I think. 70c is excellent.

The choice of test doesn't matter too much. I actually use the BOINC distributed computing client myself, but that's just me. All you're doing at this stage is trying to run all of your 4 cores at 100% load to check temps and stability, so have a look in the windows resource monitor to confirm that everything is at full load.

I presume you're using the coreTemp program to get temperatures - it's the one that everyone seems to recommend as the most accurate - http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-...ndows,Webware&filter=platform=Windows,Webware.

Think small ffts is the best for testing CPU (whats recomended in mag) but since blend seems to max my cores out and is meant to test RAM lots as well dont see how it can harm.

I'm at the missus's for the w/e but will be trying to get to 3.8 sometime next week. Waiting for 2 Zalman fanmates so I can up the speed of my case fans a bit. Front fan needs big increase in speed to pull in the cool air and rear fan moves quite well but has to deal with hot air from CPU and PSU blowing directly on it. Plus the hot air from GPU as well although some of that leaves passively through gaps in side panel. There is a mount for an 80mm fan but not sure one would fit as heatsink is right under the mount.

Cheers, I am happy that I am stable at 3.8Ghz, going to leave it there for a bit and see how much strain the system goes under, then if I think I can get away with it, I will load it up to 4Ghz and see if I can hold it there, but for the time being I will just leave it at 3.8Ghz.

Under normal use so far I haven't seen the temprature go above 50c, It's only stress testing that pushes it higher, so I might get away with a 4Ghz OC, but will it be worth it? As pointed out maybe not.

Its a good time to be OC'ing right now(if your in the UK). This little heatwave we've got has added a fair bit to my temps at idle and now i'm gonna run prime for a hour or so to see my loads temps top end value. I'm sure everything will be fine but best better be safe than sorry

Its 25C here in my room now compared to about 18C when i set the OC.

Just got home. Idle temps now at 45 (it is hot in my room) and cpu fan speed wont go above 2000rpm. When I left it was forced to max by BIOS. Can't figure that out! After 10 mins of prime 95 70 degrees load

Just increased cpu to 3.4ghz at 1.15v, getting 42 idle and 75 load. It is cooler this morning but half of me is enjoying the sun and the other half wants it to go so i can reach 3.8.

I wish I'd thought of doing a stress test when the weather was hot to test the temps under load.

I was getting 72 degrees max under load doing the small fft test in prime95 during the cooler weather. That's with a vcore of 1.38v.

Now at 3.8 at 1.216v. Idles at high 40s but with prime it hits 88. Is that too high? Not much more I can do to improve my cooling without buying lots of new bits.

thats quite high little bit too much for me on a 24/7 overclock.

you should be able to hit 4ghz on a i5 750 but id say you need to drop back to 3.6

how warm is your room ?

since the temps are up my i7 now idles 7-10C higher than before !!!

When I first got my i5 and overclocked it, I was getting higher temps due to the Coolermaster Elite 330 that I had it in. The airflow isn't good enough in the case.

Room is quite warm. Just played crysis for 40 mins and temps never rose above 63 for cpu and 70 for gpu. Its just prime that really pushes the temps skyhigh.
