    Hi,

I've never overclocked a PC before and I'm worried about damaging my new hardware. Am I right in thinking that I can just copy the settings laid out in the thread for the i7 920 straight into my BIOS? Are there any other features I need to turn on or off or do I need to move any motherboard pins around?

You can more or less use the settings as a guide, don't jump straight in with the settings listed.
Also remember the 930 runs at a different stock speed so you'll need to make the relevent changes (usually multipliers)

To me 4Ghz (from the guide) sounds high, would it be possible to overclock to say 3.5Ghz using the multipliers?

175 blk with a 20 multiplier would do it. Turn of fturbo boost to stop it from jumping up under load.

Just set your RAM at the right speed & voltage, the board will do most of the rest (although you should really set the voltages yourself for a really stable, cooler OC)

Baseclock of 175 and the multiplier set to 20 and you have 3.5. Only those two settings need to be changed, so no overvolting is required.

Chip is fast enough at base I'd suggest not overclocking in your case

3.6GHz is a nice OC, 180X20 leave turbo on and don't touch the voltages...
Thats what I did and I set my RAM to 1800MHz...

Fast is never fast enough. Both my 920's are running at 4GHz (5 min OC) and I still want more speed.

To the OP, update your BIOS before you begin, in my first 920 system, the particular BIOS (Asus P6T SE) it shipped with was stable at 188 and blue screened at 189 even with more volts. The one I updated to had no such issue.

hes a noob overclocker saspro. People who have no idea what they are doing should leave overclocking alone. Start small 3ghz then 3.1 3.2 ect

stop around 3.5ghz and be happy

Before overclocking I installed CPU-Z and I think I'm getting some strange readings?

Core voltage: between 0.944 and 1.2V

    Core speed: 1603 MHz
    Multiplier: 12
    bus speed: 133.6 MHz
    QPI Link: 2405.5

However, sometimes the multiplier will jump to 21? Is this normal?

My non stressed cpu temperature is 34C.

That's speedstep working it lowers the speed when in idle , download prime 95 and stress test it .

ok, I downloaded 'Prime95' and my new CPU-Z readings are

    core speed 2939
    multiplier 22
    bus speed 133.6 MHz
    QPI link: 2405.5

The CPU temperature appears to have remained constant

take it up there in stages, if its stable its good, if it's unstable bring it down again... simple
if you cant afford to replace hardware dont increase voltage
but dont worry overly - bit tec got 3,8 stable

btw - given a 750 goes faster then why go 930 if you dont clock it fast?
