Hi ive noticed that my cpu is running a bit hot n i'm not sure if this ok for the overclock and cooling i have.

    spec and temps

    i7 920 d0 step @ 4Ghz temps are around 60 idle and 75ish load
i have a noctua special editon cooler with two fans push pull thing but i'm not sure if i have it set up properly ? and how do i check ?
The rest of my system is in my sig

Any help would be cool :)

    Them temps are fine.

75C for a 4GHz OC is pretty good i'd say.

Remember that the i7s have a really high max temp so 75C ain't to shabby.

    Your idle temp is high.

That load temp seems fine - reasonable for a 4Ghz OC. Idle seems a little high.

What's the airflow through your case like? Is your case well-cablemanaged with good airflow?

If so, then you may have to reseat your cooler, making sure that you've correctly applied the TIM.

The only way to be sure is to reseat your cooler, cable manage your PC and ensure you have enough airflow through the case.

id guess your temps are so high idle cause you have the chip running full pelt all the time.

60 idle is about 20c above what you really want

id say 45c is an avr

Try enabling EIST and C1E in the bios - if it stays stable, you'll pull down your idle temps nicely.

The idle temp does seem too high...(enabling EIST ain't gonna solved the root cause of the high idle temp).

Any chance that when you installed the CPU cooler you used way too much TIM and that it might be overflow outside the edges? You should only use roughly pea size amount at most (I myself just use slightly more than rice grain size).

May just be worth checking the direction of the airflow of all your fans.
All fans that are in a line should be moving air in the same direction.
I couldn't see what case you have?
But i expect you have a rear 120mm fan?
If so this should pull hot air out of your case. and the two CPU fanse should also be in the same direction i.e pushing the hot air out your case, all fans have arrows on one edge to show this.
And then ideally you should have a front 120mm fan sucking the air into the case.

Your idle temp is definitely too high. I have an i7-920 at 4.2GHz which idles in the 30's then gets up to the 80's under load. I also have an i5-750 at 4.2GHz which idles in the late 20's to early 30's and gets up to 67 under load. Both are water cooled though. Still, with your cooler your idle temps should be in the 40's.

    What's your voltage?

Hi sorry to put this post back up but i've done a few bit that people have suggested ie
changed my bios so it's not running 4Ghz constant checked my fans to make sure there the right direction and cleaned and reseated my cooler :)
So at first my idle temps went down from the 50's to 42 ish fine i thought i had fixed it but now my idle temps are back in the 50's :(
I was thinking could it be the way i have my cooler ? i mean at the minute its upright with the fans facing forward but could i turn it round with the fans facing upwards if you know what i mean ?
Would this make a diffrence ?
Any help would be cool :)

You have to remember that Noctua products are designed for silence over cooling, I've used some of their fans in the past and while they are very quiet they give poor performance. You also may want to try dropping your voltages slightly, as this can have a dramatic difference in temps.

    Good luck with it.

Try using Realtemp, see if it gives a different reading. I use it daily and it is supurbe :)

Have you got alot of stuff running in the background? If the CPU is doing alot of background tasks then that may keep the temps high.

42C in bios and 50C in windows - multiple programs/steam/msn messenger/others pile of crap can and will slightly bump your CPU usage. Overall 50C is not bad especially if you using crappy cooler.
