Hmm... is this acquisition a good thing? What's your opinion on this Gareth?
The way Red Hat's been going lately, it was only a matter of time before someone big snapped 'em up. Of the likely candidates, IBM's a pretty good one - providing, of course, it stays true to its promise of letting Red Hat just get on with getting on and doesn't try to dress 'em all in white shirts and blue suits and teach 'em the company songs.
So Red Hat has been doing well financially lately? Good for them. Let's hope IBM doesn't ruin a good thing by trying to make it better.
I prefer to think of it as IBM making a charitable donation to the open-source community.
"Hey, you know that company that ruined Gnome, keeps breaking GTK again every time you turn around, and forced systemd on you by merging a lot of unrelated stuff into it? We just spent billions of dollars to ensure they don't hurt you any more. "
