This afternoon I watched the tele and I saw a commercial with some team playing basketball. The manager (I think) said there's a new guy, name linux and he's a very good player he said, and he's gonna show you all how to play the game.

At the payers office (I think) the manager was asked about this new guy who's teaching the others, and he said "yeah, his name is linux, he's a real topplayer" the other one: "how much does he costs?" manager: "peanuts" the other one: "how can a top player play for peanuts?" manager: "he loves the game"

And the commercial ends with the logo of IBM

    ...err...WTF?

I have seen that ad... keep in mind that if 10 IT managers called IBM asking about mac servers in a single week you would see an IBM ad on tv about their support of Mac OSX... they are totally service oriented now and don't care how they make their money anymore..

IBM have thrown their weight totally behind Linux. I recently had a chance to talk to a product manger from IBM about their strategy for Linux on zSeries hardware (big mainframes). We run it on ours as a matter of fact, but it's currently not doing anything useful/interesting.

Birth is an important theme throughout--The end is the birth of the star child (mankind's next evolutionary phase), but throughout the movie, birthdays figure pretty prominently. One of the astronauts gets a 'happy birthday' video call, Heywood Floyd (the scientist in the first part who goes to the moon), his daughter has a birthday, even HAL says he 'became operational' (was born) in Urbana Illinois. The beginning of the movie is even sort of a birthday for humanity itself.

The monolith was present at that transition from one stage of evolution to another (the hominid learns to use a tool and becomes a man), as it was at the transition at the end of the movie.

Something like that anyway. Or lots of drugs, that could be it too.
