I've noticed with many of my friend's ibooks that when leaving your hand next to the mouse pad, after a while it stains the plastic. For example in this picture you can see in the bottom right hand corner. Is it just dirty, or the plastic wearing off? My mate has tried to clean his but it made no difference.. :s
It looks like dirt or grime to me. The iBook is painted on the inside of the plastic casing, so the paint isn't wearing off. I'm not sure about the plastic wearing off, I don't see how that would happen.
It probably is discoloring as you suggested - my trusty MS natural keyboard is very discolored where my hands rest (5 years old) no matter how much I clean it.
mine is fine after about 6 months, no noticable discolouration. If you keep it in good nick then I think it should be ok for a long time, but of course it is more prone to dirt than other colours.
Theres some foam you can get from RS I think, for cleaning creme, white computer casing and all you basicly do is spray it on and scrub it in and it just cleans it :S Cant remember the name but its dam good stuff!!! Love the ibook
This has happened to all my laptops, and any beige keyboard with a wrist rest, even when i got into the habit of washing my hands before doing anything with the computer. As Nick says there is proper stuff to get this off, as it seems to get into the dimples of the plastic or something and wont come off with a good scrub.
