I was just wondering whether any of you guys on here that have an ibook G4 have noticed how crappy the build quality on them is?
I know apple is supposed to be brilliant for things like this, but the powerbook just seems so much better built than this thing.

I take good care of my ibook, it has no marks on it or anything, never been dropped, but there are things wrong with it that really piss me off, for one, the mouse button on the trackpad sqeaks when i press it which is the most annoying thing in the world.

The latch is faulty on the lid so i have to tap the top of the lid for the little hook to come down.

Nah trust me... my powerbook's quality wasn't great either... I've got a dead pixel, plus about 2 side screws on the left were in wonky which means that the slightest tap on the power thing poings it to a possition where it's not charging any more, my power thing the 'ring' lights up red sometimes if it wiggles itself into an odd possition or light is totally off if it was already charged (probably just messing with the green LED in it to make it go red instead of orange or off instead of green)

Plus now there's several bent bits probably from my doing as I have a tendancy to drop the buggering thing... so I can't complain about them, although it should hold up to a bit of abuse surely..

Some of Apple's hardware is famously poor. Look at the iPod nano, the screen cracks it gets scratched. I know three people with PowerBooks: one's backlight broke after 7 months, another's CD drive stopped working after 14 months (they were both 15") and the other was a 12" which is fine - but it's only 3 months old. Cory Doctrow (famous jornalist) had his 15" PB repaired/replaced five times in as many months due to issues with the screen. eMacs' screens break if there's a power dip. Look at the discolouring issues with the new MacBooks.

Apple design stylish hardware, which is then made (badly) by the same companies that make other laptops. They can't really hope to have better build quality.

I love my 12" PB. Only thing weird is on the right front side, the metal is bended slightly outwords.. have never dropped it or anything like that.. I reckon it's from the heat..

my brother has a 12" iBook and loves it aswell. but indeed the mouse button does make a bit of a weird sound...

I had one of the original "ice book" g3s when they first came out and the build quality was terrific...

I've found that as the lines have progressed, the build quality has gone down, but the popularity has gone up dramatically.

in other words, now that apple are making large numbers of their products, the quality has gone done because they're making large numbers...

it's fairly common in manufacturing in general, and can be seen pretty much anywhere, including dell, compaq etc.

as for discoloring, i've yet to have an issue with my mbp and that... just the annoying whine of the faulty power regulator
