I'm thinking of buying an Apple iBook 12" and an iPod mini from the apple store (An actual shop, like.. one you can walk into and poke stuff).

According to their website, you can purchase an iPod mini and the iBook and get a £100 rebate, which sounds great.

But, the iPod mini's aren't anywhere on the site, so I can't really find out how much its going to cost me in the store, or whether they even do that offer in the stores.

Does anyone here know anything about this? I'd like to know!

    Cheers

Funny you should ask, I just ordered that exact same combo today :p

Basically, they aren't making the mini any more (focussing on the nano), so they don't have them on the site. But they do still have some in stock which they are only selling as part of the offer. I ordered the 4Gb version which was £127 (so essentially £27!). Not sure about the 6 gig version, I think it was £159 though. And I think they do the education offers in the official Apple stores (there are 3 in the UK), but not in the resellers, which don't even give a student discount.

Best bet is to phone them up if you're unsure :)

    Thanks for the reply mate!

I did phone their online store up yesturday, to enquire. But the woman on the other end was trying too hard to sell me the product rather than tell me the complete details of the offer. Oh, and she also said that she didn't know much about their stores.

So, I tried to get through to their birmingham store (In the bullring, the number is 0121 260 1900 if you ever need it) but none of the extentions worked. Their Business line just hung up on me (how rude :() then when i held to speak to the operator, it just gave me the busy tone.

I'll just go down there when I've been payed.

I'm thinking of this combo (If you're interested that is):

    - iPod mini Pink -6GB £132.00
    - iBook 12" - Combo Drive £599.00
    - Nylon Sleeve for iBook 12" £25.49
    - Apple Mighty Mouse £27.00

    Comes to a whopping... £873.60
    After VAT and Student Discount

Then I'm assuming I'll have to fill in the rebate form and send that in! My dad's not going to be happy lol, I promiced him 150 quid out of my £875 paycheque, oopsie!

Hmmm. I paid more for the iBook than that. Maybe Apple have some dodgy scheme going on where the price is dependant on the uni you go to? But anyway it all looks good :thumb:

Those prices aren't inclusive of VAT (the total is though)..

ooor just use the apple education website from your uni computers...

you can't access it to buy anything using an IP address from home.

I've just ordered a nano with discount

I can't speak for all apple stores but while in Canada I visited the Toronto apple store and they were more than happy to give me an educational discount after the wave of some ID (which they barely checked to be honest), I was also told that they would've accepted studentship proof in the form of logging on to an educational website, such as your uni's webmail.

Also I'm pretty sure there are different levels of discount, I ordered my mac mini online and got a larger discount by buying from a computer connected to the cambridge network than I'd have got if I'd gone to the apple store - education - and typed in my uni from any old computer. I'm not sure why!

Thats weird. I'll give them another call on monday, I'm at college, so I can't logon using my uni's network.. because I dont attent a uni :p Although I really should be at uni by now!

I cant wait till I get payed, I've always wanted an iBook, although I've always hated iPods due to all the problems people (and my girlfriend) have with them. But the integration of iTunes with the iPod imo is brilliant, if only iTunes supported more mp3 players :(

In the actual store, they can give you student discounts on most hardware, but Software you can only get a discount online :D

    Funny..

I just rang up the online store. The prices there are a LOT cheaper than they are in stores and online.. Heres what the guy on the phone quoted me:

    - iPod mini Pink -6GB
    - iBook 12" - Combo Drive
    - Nylon Sleeve for iBook 12"
    - Apple Mighty Mouse

    £820.00

    Thats almost 55 quid cheaper!

Well, I've now made my purchase.

It came to £901 in the end, but I do get £100 back from it.

    I purchased:

    - 12" iBook - 1.33ghz, 512mb ram, 40gb hd, cdrw/dvd drive, radeon 9550/32mb
    - Apple Mighty Mouse
    - iPod Photo 20gb
    - Laptop Case

I've not used my pc since I got it on tuesday, so, I'm thinking of selling it and buying either an eMac or a Mac mini (I'd rather an eMac though).

Nice buy, but I wouldn't have bought the Mighty Mouse. From everything I've heard, it's pretty crappy. I would spend it on a nice MS or Logitech mouse instead. :p

Very nice... welcome to the land of OS X... you'll probably won't regret it.

But I do keep a PC as well... kinda for those times when I want a few sessions of online gaming, CAD work or for extreme processor power, which my PB lacks... but for the rest of the time, my PB and OS X rules.

I'm drooling at the fact that Mactels are coming... WinXP and OS X in one box...can't wait!

P.S. The Mighty Mouse rules too!! So well in-fact, that I run a Mighty Mouse and an Apple Pro Keyboard on my WinXP desktop box... but for gaming... it kinda sucks balls.

They're brillaint, I've wanted one since i started college almost 3 years ago.

I've only recently had enough money to buy one, so I thought I'd go the full wack and swtich my whole computing lifestyle.

I use my iBook for everything now, iTunes integration to the iPod is fantastic. Everything inside the OS works together.

The only problem I have at the moment is audio input and lack of ram, although ram from crucial isn't as expencive as I thought it would be, so I'll upgrade to a gig soon.

Currently I've got Safari, Azureus, Mail, iChat, Msn Messenger, iTunes and Limewire open, and according to a nifty widget, I've got 10mb free ram. So, I deffinatly need more.

As for the mighty mouse, what problems? I've had no problems at all with it so far!

    Edit:

Another thing that quite suprised me was the graphics chip.

Its quite damn fast for a 9550! The halo demo runs really well, anyone fancy a game?

dump MSN Messenger... on OS X it's a dud...

try Adium X instead... miles better, iChat, ICQ et al integration... uses MSN smilies... and fully customisable too.

Since using Adium X, I actually don't like using even normal windows MSN messenger anymore.. always prefering to use Adium X on my PB even if i'm working on my PC!

I do have AdiumX, but I dont like the way the chat windows screw up if someone has more than say 10 characters in their screen name.

Also, if I sign onto msn using adium, then sign back on using MSN Messenger (on windows or mac), do something with my contact list, say delete a few nasty people, then sign back on again, they get re added and unblocked.

I've tried using proteus, but that was even worse! The first time I lauched the program it crashed. Tried it again and it worked ok, but then crashed after a few minutes.

    Edit:

    I've just fallen in love:

hmm.. haven't had the problems you've mentioned. mines seems fine.. the only problem (or god send in my case) is that animated smilies do not show in the screen name... i find that if they do, it's damn annoying, so i'm glad they don't.
