Hi there. Wanting to no how hard is it to make a custom length IDE cable. NOT ROUND cable just flat and custom lengths from the plug to the next plug? Wanting to get or make a custom ide cable for in a case. HDDs are not on top of each other thay are side by side. Wanting flat as easy to hide under mobo and that. Also to be a 2 device ide cable. Are the plugs easy to remove and add a new one? This is how the HDD's are in my case. Photo is not of my case But shows you how thay are setup Thanks
I think it's possible, but I don't know of a source for the connectors. 80 pin would be more difficult than 40 pin, but I think the connectors are available that you just press into the wire (more technical, I cannot offer.) I found this site online (search for ribbon cable) http://www.awcwire.com/ProductTOC.aspx?id=Ribbon-Cable
I've shortened IDE cables before. The connectors just clip together, so you can carefully pry them apart with a tiny screwdriver, move them to where they are (don't rotate it!) then clip it together. A box cutter/stanley knife works well to cut the cable after shortening. The 80 channel cable can be bought from Maplin.
as pedro says, it's incredibly easy. pry open the connectors, take them off, and reattach wherever you need them. don't worry if you snap off the tabs on the connectors, they'll still hold just fine. then grab a pair of scissors and trim off any excess.
Thanks all. yeh i have made a 2 device ide cable into a single device cable before but have never removed a plugs. thanks
If you are going to make custom lengths, you may want to dye them like Cheapskate did in one of his threads. Liquid RIT cloth dye comes in a horrible number of colors and really works well. You can even change the ratio of water added and dye to make shades of colors. My old quilting days still haunt me. Tie dye a ribbon cable? I use SATA. john
Yeh that sounds cool. Anyways I have made my mind up to upgrade to sata. Just going to have to find sum sort sata cables that have 1 angled end and locking clips on them.
probably be a little short for that. 360 cables are only a couple inches long, aren't they? it's easy enough to find 90deg sata cables, most stores should have them.
will need about 6 to 10" cables and wouldnt i need 180 angled sata to go into teh drive. If i use 90deg i would have 2 have the hdd's installed upside down. ? Also has any one used them sata & power combo cables?
