Does anyone have any experience with IDE to SATA adapter that plugs into motherboard instead of drives? Specifically looking at the type that offers two sata ports and bootable. I would prefer this type to ones that plug into the drive, as it would allow me to use sata cables instead of IDE which is much easier to cable manage. Reason I am after one is I will be upgrading SSD soon, and rolling them all downhill so to speak. The last PC I have that does not have ssd already I want to be able to use my lowly 32GB Patriot Torx on. It is a mitx board and expansion is occupied by GPU so a card is not an option, and it does not have sata at all... having 2 sata ports would be preferred so I can also use a larger sata 320GB hdd I have spare for additional storage instead of the only IDE I have left which is only 40GB. I have seen several like I am looking for, but most of them have a lot of negative review... Thanks!
Uh, why would you want to switch to SSD and limit it by the throughput of an IDE channel? Upgrade your mobo instead.
Because I already have all the stuff, and it is fine for what I use it for. Even if it's on 133, I still would benefit by access times with ssd over hdd. System in question is low end now, and would have very little resale value to counter outlay on new mitx motherboard. I would rather spend my budget on larger ssd for primary pc.
Also note that with IDE you will lose TRIM support (among other things). I think you'll benefit more with a new motherboard with SATA, and new HDD, so that you can use Native command Queue and increase nicely your HDD performance.
I have two real computers that are up to date-ish. This is for my legacy pc that runs XP / DOS (dos lives on a CF card). LOL. I am fully aware of the cons involved. This is more about using things I ALREADY HAVE. The sata HDD is a gen 1 so I don't even know if it has ncq, etc, and don't care. It's bigger drive, so it's more useful. So once again, I want to maybe spend like $15 to accomplish being able to use sata disk, not replace something that is otherwise fine.
Which ones have you already looked at that have bad reviews? For obscure stuff like this I tend to use Lambda-Tek - they have a huge range of stuff.
