64-bit Ultimate, as I've got 4GB of RAM, and wanted all of it to be available. Only problem so far, BF2142 doesn't like Vista (64 or 32), so I dual boot back to XPx64.
64bit Home Premium OEM. Not problems with drivers at all except for my Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS. But Creative are AWFUL for drivers so nothing new there. My only real complaint with vista is the problem with file sharing. More specifically accessing the Vista file from an XP pc. I only managed to work out how to access the XP files from the vista pc a couple days ago after countless hours of trying different methods. Otherwise, i love Vista. Lots and lots like jelly tots. *Nervous cough* yeah...
32, cuz that's what the torrent sites had. i will be switching back to xp fairly soon, maybe i'll install xp64
I'm using Vista x64. MUCH better/faster/stable/responsive than x86 version, really uses my 4 gigs of RAM and it shows when opening lots of programs at the same time. Only one bad thing about it: cannot use my Genius scanner anymore, they just won't release new drivers... Anyway, I've got my notebook with vista x86 so I can use it there without a problem, still its not a comfortable situation!! But hey, it was about time users had the option to move to a decent x64 OS...
64bit was a mistake I think... I have racked up more than 1GB in error reports lol! on a slightly different note, what is the situation with OSX and 64bit?
Vista 64Bit Ultimate here, with 4GB Ram. Works very well and all my hardware has drivers for it (even if some of the drivers are still a bit limited in function). Find it to be very stable and responsive. Only come across 1 or 2 programs that dont run on vista x64, but thats mainly due to it either being a very old 8/16bit app, or because the program uses the IPX protocol, which was phased out in xp 64bit, though this is where VMWare/VirtualPC comes in
MG did you use the nvidia 15.01 drivers or the microsoft ones, im having issues with the latest nvidia sata driver?
Both, i use Business edition, but 32bit for my lappy, and 64 on my Main machine, which is what i chose. Sam
Dimebar: I just used windows update to get the drivers, then updated the graphics one because the transition effects were a bit shite, it went a bit blocky, but the new drivers sorted that one out. Everything else is as per-windows update though
64-bit Ultimate oem, and XP-MCE dual boot, main boot to XP though as it seems a bit more stable. 3 issues with Vista: 1. (BFG Tech 6600GTOC) Nvidia driver stops working (black screen flash and recovery window pop up constantly until I reboot) every now and again; 2. one of the updates refuses to install; 3. Every so often when I shut down it will get stuck in an endless loop on the shutting down screen. Seems very slow (but then I'm only running 1Gb of ram, I think I need 2). I think after I either buy another Gb of ram or replace my current 2x512mb with 2x 1GB sticks and add a hew HDD I've got I may try and reinstall see if I can sort out all 3 issues. Probably pull out my TV card as well as I don't use it and I doubt it's vista certified either.
Blademrk, I think your proposed solutions should solve it. Definitely the 2gb options (adding another gig of 2x512 now is probably not an awful lot cheaper than 2x1gb sticks these days, depending on the speed of course). The reinstall will probably help as well BUT the black screen 6600 issue maybe un-resolvable with the way the nVidia drivers for vista are going.
I'll be popping vista on soon-ish, once I pick up some new PC bits (thought not as soon as I orig intended because of a house move) Was just looking at newegg prices for 2x1GB as opposed to 2x2GB and its so cheap it would be rude not to go for the 4GB, but this leads me to a conundrum as to whether I go for 32 or 64-bit Vista (with 2GB it would have been a no-brainer for 32). I've gotten used to stability, my XP now hasn't crashed (or needed a reinstall) since my last upgrade nearly 2 years ago, so I'm perhaps less tolerant of crashes and instability that others. This leads me towards 32-bit, but after seeing the amount of "64-bit, no problems" replies here I may reconsider. So my question is this, to all the users on 64-bit, when you say "not had any problems" does that mean "everything works fine and it has never crashed" or "it hasnt crashed enough to make me change yet"
I've not had a single crash from 64-bit since the weekend 32-bit I think I had one crash but apart from that, nothing. I think you've been lucky with your XP install because its usually unstable in general. I haven't even had programs randomly stop working and generating error reports with Vista. IF you go for 64-bit make sure your hardware has the drivers for it. Some people have old tv cards that aren't supported, however I knew mine was so that is why I chose it. Ultimately this will probably make your mind up for you.
just a little piece of advice: 2 gb RAM would be a minimum for vista x86 iff you're looking for great performance. as for vista x64... you should go for 4 gigs if you really want to tell the difference in performance.
So, did you install it at the weekend, or did it crash at the weekend? Appears that everything except my E-Mu (which has beta drivers as of now) has drivers for x64, but its just beta for 32-bit as well, so thats not an issue. And one of the printers, which doesn't have a driver for vista full stop (what happens if I try to install an XP-64 driver? explosions?)
I installed it on the weekend (sorry, I should have clarified that). I haven't hooked up my printer yet, I constantly forget to do it, but my advice is just plug it in, Vista may find a driver for it anyway. That is one of the best parts of installing vista, you don't need your driver CD's, windows updates gets everything you need (at least, it did with me). I see you have the 8800gtx as well, definitely get the latest nVidia drivers, the ones windows update gets are not the latest and the new ones improve performance so much. In fact, i'd say that for all of the drivers, get the latest ones if you can, BUT my point being is that you don't necessarily need to in order for your system to perform.
I'm on Vista 64 Ultimate now, I tryed looking for drivers for some of my stuff and could not find any, Vista on the other hand could lol so I have not had a problem so far, I'm surprised tbh I was expecting nightmares or at least some drama, but no, its all fine and dandy, for now....
