You are sent 50 years into the near future (for 15minutes) due to a freak accident in the CPC/bit tech lab's caused by, the tea lady having a tamtrum over the price of his weekday afternoon chocolate biscuits.

You will shortly return and you are able to grab one portion of technology from a high class computing system.

You pick one part to bring back to give todays systems a boost.

    What do you go for:

Storage Technology (bonus you get the copy of the operating system or all softwares installed for reverse coding and understanding of software design etc).
    Graphics Technology-
    Human Input Output systems-(VR etc)
    Central Processor Unit-
    Other-

What most needs a boost today?

Bandwidth - but I wouldn't know how to bring it back.

Human input; the mouse/keyboard combo hasn't really changed in the last 30 years.

I think that the biggest change will be in user interface and human input.

I want the computers in minority report

So what, your telling me I have time to take a computer apart to get one component, why not just grab the whole computer :p

Definately Human Input, that'd be cool

That's incredibly difficult because without the others, one is almost useless.

I say almost, I'd probably bring back storage tech with all the software on board. Software is the key to making crazy awesome stuff happen (at least I think so in my unknowledgable mind).

We already have cool human input devices, what we're lacking is ways of utilising those fully.

Definitely storage. Aside from the OS and software that's stored on it, the slow speed of today's storage technology is a real bottleneck in the speed of current systems. When compared to the speed of processors and RAM, and even the GPU, even SSD is huge orders of magnitude behind the fastest components.

Well you can be reasonably sure that the storage amounts in 50 years will be near infinate, bus bandwidth or through put will be in todays terms instant, in other words I would guess you should be able to transfer every bit of data currently available on earth today in less than a second, maybe multipuls of order of that amount.

Thats pretty decent tech to bring back but what about interface tech, the possiblity for total emersion video games, you might not have the power to run a real life simulation to it but that would be a pretty good unit to bring out, nvidia would really have some thing to work on then.

The thing is that although the capacity is increasing so is the file size of the media (whether it be video, image or audio). Now for example terabyte HDD are commonplace but so are huge blu-ray rips. Storage in the future could seem vast and un-fillable but that is with a comparison to current capacity. Im pretty sure that in the future that we will be complaining that capacity is too small to hold all our 'Ultra-Quad-Hi-def' films :)

    Communications - for faster internets
    Storage - for faster PCs

Pfft. I'd either grab a copy of the financial times, or grab their super internet connection and finally fulfill a lifelong dream; I'd download a car.

You wouldn't Download a Car, Would you?

I'd go for the Graphics Card. Put that with a few i7 cores so I might be able to play Crysis on Medium settings.

BINGO! +1 rep for you sir....although you really dont need it

as for me, i think the storage tech is definetly the way to go. However, if the whole system is there on the desk id have the lot.

So go for the hard drives, a 100 petabyte drive in a normal bay, that would be fun.
