For those that didn't notice earlier this week, Google personalized home has now changed its name to iGoogle. Almost 2 years ago (May of 2005) we were discussing the launch of Google's personalized home page. As jazzle pointed out, the URL looked as though it pointed towards the lamest name google has ever given anything In fact, the name was intended to be iGoogle from the start, but was changed last minute by the co-founders. Now that iGoogle has already gripped gmail users and even gotten this geek to to use a personalized home (which I never thought I would do), they decided not even a bad name could ruin it now, so why not? I'm being sarcastic, I think they are simply hoping to make it a stronger brand than "Google personalized home", considering this product was their number one growing product last year. All names aside, I love the service and don't care what they call it, but I hate to see someone as cool as Google copying an obviously Apple marketing technique. (Not because I don't like Apple, but because it feels like a blatant copy of marketing, regardless of who started it.)
I didn't think the google personalized home was all that special. I set mine up ages ago. Hardly use it though as I don't like to stay signed in to any web service. plain ol' www.google.co.jp or .com is my preffered homepage. only sign into the personalized (or I guess now iGoog) every now and again. guess it's not a homepage then...meh. agree on the marketing ripoff. I'd expect better from Google.
I'm still not convinced it didn't stand for 'Internet gateway' at one point in its history... and I'd rather believe that than iGoogle any day. iGoogle is a hideous name, eugh. I've stopped using it recently for some reason. It's easier to have about:blank as the home page.
I've been using the personalised homepage incredibly useful, if only because it means that I have a todo list readily available at all times.
I've been using it for some time because it gives me a nice page with some feeds, some interesting information (like word of the day) and a portal to search both google and wikipedia from. Extremely useful.
I've been using ig for quite some time, and love it. Yeah, the new name is pretty lame if you ask me, but it's still a fantastic service.
Yer same here (using it for ages and agree that its a fantastic service). I saw this last week or whenever it came out... and I thought - mm thats strange clicked on "classic homepage" and noticed it wasn't there. But now for some reason my homepage is the classic homepage and isn't igoogle :/ anyone know whats gone wrong? Ed
I have BiT set as home on this rig, but at home all the other computers have personalised homepages from "iGoogle", and with the news, weather, some snippets like word of the day, it's great.
Blaspemy, burn the witch!!!! sorry seemed apropate. But all the tabs that were open when I shut down the computer are open when I start it. But I think my homepage is google.com.
There is porn on the web??? Who would have believed it! But my mum uses the web.... filthy cow! Just wait until I tell Dad...
Firefox, open bookmarks in tabs is the best thing ever. iGoogle? Who cares about the name, it is an awesome way to configure your own favourite features.
