I'm gonna cheat slightly, and use a pack of ready cut prespex coffee coasters Couldn't find my smallest torx screwdriver to take the hdd apart... ah well
Simple but effective..... Now I know what to do with that rubbish magazine cds and that old 2,4 GB HDD.... Thanks for inspiration!!!! GeeK!
Thanks guys for your kind comments *puts cup on mat... takes it off...puts it back on...takes it off.....*
I liked this coaster business so much that I had to try it too. http://www.metku.net/index.html?sect=view&n=1&path=mods/coaster/index_eng
That's great, Japala! And since I had the original idea, I can say that I have inspired not only hippo's cool coaster, but a mod by the Japala!! How cool is that!? Btw, I've received all the LEDs for my multi purpose furniture, so I might start experimenting on my own soon.
Don't want to be a nag, but it is not exactly an original idea (tho perhaps you meant you were the first to post about it on Bit-tech). I've seen led coasters all over the place for some time now. They sell them on ebay, and at...er...alchoholic enthusiast websites such as this one. So while bard may not have been the "first to market" with this idea, no one can refute that he definitely inspired us all to do it ourselves!
My effort... Nothing on it... Glass of your favourite beverage... Only took about 45mins Might sand the edges slightly to get a more even light spread, although it looks alright as it is
well lets see who makes the brightes/biggest/coolest one well seriusly how about putting a peltier at the bottom and with a switch change it's polarity so it warm/cools a glass of whatever. but then it would be hard to drive it from batteries and you would have to have a smaal wattage on the peltier because we don't want a fan in there
Damn these things are cool, everyones making one ! How long are those batteries going to last thou japala ? I thought CR2032's were rated at about 200mAh. 10 hours at 20mA drain ? *offers japala a box of batteries*
I've actually got a peice of blue foam in the middle there, so if i took that out then it will light up the drink better I was going to put a LED in the middle there pointing upwards, but there isn't quite enough room
Might be possible to do it by making a potential divider, with one side of it a thermister. Another possibility is to use a PIC12C508. They come in surface mount form so would be small enough, and you can do very basic temperature monitoring by using the internal clock (see the Microchip web site for an app note). MoJo
Isn't using a PIC going a little far for a coaster... It's easy enough to build a simple temperature circuit with your thermisitor. This page may shed some light on what you need to build.
MMMmmmmm, very nice!!! I got a nice idea too (extend what you have come up with) but a) I can't find my hdd platter that was around here somewhere, and b) I have a strick no drinks near my comps rule
