    Hey guys,

not been back on bit-tech for absolutely ages, gave up on the pc modding scene for a bit to mess about and learn some stuff about cars...

im surprised ive kept this one since february, had another mk1 golf, mk3 golf, polo g40 and a mini cooper s before this one, currently breaking a mk1 golf gti if anyone is after spares

been doing loads of work to my mk1 golf and ive started documenting it in a blog...

if anyone fancies a bit of reading then go for it...

i fitted a new sub, amp, new hubs, bearings, 280mm discs, pads and calipers yesterday which took it out of me cos i was hungover as **** hahaha....

enjoy... still got loads more to do, cant wait till i come back off holiday and my paint on the o/s qtr will be sorted (some guy crashed into me, ive repaired the damage and primered it up but need to paint it still) and got my new engine being built up...

im keeping it k-jet with the original mk1 gti engine 1800, my jobs for the engine which ive got done are ported and polished head, piper cam and vernier pulley, new dizzy and oil pump and im having all the seals and gaskets replaced in the engine... oh and a beasty oil cooler

two things i need to pick up before it goes back together are a windage tray and an audi 2.2 litre throttle body which ill polish up

Nice work. I miss wrenching on Golfs. I'm looking for a mk3 Polo, possibly a G40, but the main goal is a complete engine swap and conversion to rear wheel drive.

I'm not familiar with VW, but I don't think they made casual cars using a RWD platform since the original Beetle. I'm guessing you'd be sourcing the rear end from another car, such as a Silvia?

**edit: nice car, by the way, grungedead

Most of the work would be custom made parts, but a donor car would be useful. I'm trying to avoid using one though as I won't be using many car parts :thumb: (shhh it's a secret)

the g40 was an amazing car but the suspension design was terrible.

if your considering rear wheel drive and an engine swap i would just get a mk3 polo (non g40) the only things that make the G40 special is the engine/suspension 20mm drop and upgraded brakes and a couple of badges... (youll pay a minimum on a 1k premium on a mk3 polo price for a g40, however you can sell the engine for about the same)

there was a mk3 1.8t with the engine mounted in the rear that was pushing around 380bhp, still being FWD it would aquaplane over a puddle and youd probably **** your pants...

the best handling platform out there is probably the mk1 golf, with some work you can make it 4wd by modifying a mk2 golf syncros running gear as this was 4wd out of the factory...

yes you are correct in the fact that no new vws since the beetle have come from teh factory with RWD but many have messed about and done some silly things including RWD, twin engines, one mad ******* is putting 2 x 2.4 24v engines into a lupo which weighs about as much as a loaf of bread

as you can imagine its going to be scary...

check out edition38 and vwvortex if you want some ideas for some crazy dubs :)

thanks for the comments guys :)

Yeah, the main idea behind getting a G40 was the upgrades to the brakes and suspension. Most money would be made back on selling the surpercharged engine. But I guess it would be a lot cheaper and easier to get a nice 1L from somewhere. Goal is around 300-350bhp and extremely light, basically a track car.

What's the point in splashing out on a G40 if you're going to take out one of the bonus points (the engine)?

Surely you can just fit a decent set of coilovers and new discs/pads for ~£1000 and have a better setup on a Mk.3?

Nice car btw grungdead, I liked your G40, but I think I prefer this. Not my kind of thing to mod. it like this, but there we are! :p

People are willing to pay lots for a G40 engine. I was thinking of just tuning one up and then when I came to the engine swap I'd earn some money back by selling the old one. As it stands though, I'll be going down the 1 or 1.3l route.

Fair enough identikit, I didn't think people would pay that much for a G40 engine with a bit of refurb done on it.

    Isn't 300hp a bit ambitious from a 1-1.3l engine, even turbo'd?

Well I do know of a certain 1.3l engine that's up for the job :thumb:

Its a nice looking car there - the rear lights, seats and exhaust arent in keeping with the car IMO but other than that it looks very interesting! Like the wheels btw - as already said, i'd be impressed if you got 300bhp out of that engine without throwing a whole silly lot of cash at it, my 3SGTE with a few mods is putting out that, in a mk1 golf that would be very quick - if you ever got the power down  Ah, but is the plan RWD?

That's a lot of output from a 1.3L. You're going to have to use it at unnaturally high revs to produce the exhaust volume needed for a big turbo. I'd say 220-250ps being the ceiling without needing some intense fuel mapping and aggressive cams.

**edit: actually, costly forged internals may be needed as well, though I don't know the duribility of factory VW engines very well. If they're anything like Toyota's motors, you should be okay.

**edit: actually, come to think of it, 300ps is okay. You'd just want to avoid pressing the accelerator in a corner with the engine revs high :nono: tsk tsk lol

with a G40 the most power your looking at is around 250bhp

    that would be with

    1341cc overboaring
    enlarged pistons
    bigger injectors
    new ecu and remap
g60 or g40 charger ported running a small pulley
    charge cooler
    larger intercooler
    big induction kit,
    4 branch mani
    full ss exhaust
    toothed belt kit

even then youll have a powereful engine but in a mk3 polo chassis youll want to splash out 700 quid on coilies and get a quaife LSD, probably worth getting a helix paddle clutch too! so all in all, its ALOT of money...

plus putting high boost levels through a small block engine is one way to very quick melted pistons!

your probably best off going down the 1.8t route if you want 250bhp or more, there was a 1.8t 370bhp mk3 polo which was mental, i wouldnt drive it tho personally i dont have that big a death wish...

re: my car :) im not putting 4wd into out or 300bhp haha, im just rebuilding a mk1 8v k-jet engine with a fair few performance mods, i should see around 140-150bhp, my old G40 was about 150bhp and they both weigh the same thereabouts but the golf is just a far bettter chassis and handles likes its on rails...

its helps because ive fully polybushed the shell and got it sitting on FK konigsports whcih some very hard damping... need to fit a lower strut brace at the front for some extra stiffness and possibly fit a new steering rack to keep it all nice and tighter...

the rear lights, i bought all clears to tint them, will be doing the bottom half first, leaving the top clear as ive seen it done before and it looks very good, however im not sure and will probably go for a full tint.

im currently debating whether or not to put metal bumpers on the car, or to stick with the black plastic, if i do stick with the plastic theres a decision between leaving the front colour coded or getting a new black plastic one...

my new brakes are bedding in nicely, need to grab a mk2 16v servo and passat master cylinder to help the brake pedal feel a bit more responsive.

the exhaust - when i put my freshly rebuilt engine back in at the start of next month i have a 4 branch manifold to put on, im currently looking for a SS centre pipe, ideally boxless and ill mate it to this backbox or the peco big bore 2 ive got kicking about in the house, the car will be loud enough from the engine anyway as it will be kicking out some mean backpressure.

pretty much all aftermarket golf zorsts look like an asbo tailpipe, bent to the side, may even get longlife to build me one up but we'll see what happens...

krikkit, we meet up every month at salford quays in the dubs so if your ever around and fancy looking at some cool motors let me know, next one is the 3rd july

webbyman - haha you didnt like the plates on the G hahaha... which ones dont you like, the banded ones? ive now got pressed metal uk font plates which look 100 times tidier

    more pics on here guys
