AMSN is a program that can apparently support webcams over MSN, but I haven't tried it in a while. It was a little buggy last time I tried it, but it could be better now. It might work a little better for you than Kopete, because it's designed to look and feel more like MSN Messenger.
I have a webcam working with AMSN on Mepis 6.0 (which is based on Debian & Ubuntu (which is also based on Debian))
what did you do to config yours as it was detected and previewed fine under ubuntu but when i try in amsn it lags for ages and no preview or settings or anything...
Actually it's my cousin that uses it (I set it up & loaned it to her for school). I just installed AMSN & it worked. I'll ask her if she had to change or add any settings but I doubt she even knows how to access the settings.
keef247 - I talked to my cousin, she said after I instaled AMSN the camera "just worked". I hadn't installed any drivers for it nor did I take any other steps. Sorry I can't help more. Maybe the people on the aMSN forums can help.
I've forwarded ports 6890-6900 apparently thats for cams.will try again soon.anyone got the code to get amsn as i got it from automatix and im on a format now so i DONT want to install that crap again lol.
If Ubuntu (haven't tryed that one yet) has Synaptic, just load that, hit [Reload] to refresh available packages, search for aMSN, mark for installation, hit [Apply].
i use mercury messenger, but it isn't open source (still free) it's the only one that doesn't make me miss the real msn client
