Networks I'm getting cable in my area, what modem and hubs are good?

Ok, first off I live in illinois in the good ol' USA. Im sick of the 28.8 connection we get and now cable internet is available. What kinda stuff should i get? net working bout 4 computers. well, 2-3 right now and gonna build one this summer. what modem,firewall, and hub/switch/routers are good? any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

 

firewall i would get a software one like firewall, as that is a lot less expensive and easier to upgrade then a physical one....

to connect all the pcs id get a 100mbit switch which is always handy for lans...something like the netgear 8 port is a great buy....

modem wise, over here it depends on the service provider...

i got the shagboard...aint too bad aint to great either....

 

linksys befsr41 router.. easy to setup, built in hardware firewall, and a built in 4 port switch to boot.. all for around 60-70 bucks.. plus they have superb tech support..

thats what i have.. i love it and couldnt live without it.. seriously though, its about the most popular router around.. and for a good reason.. although 90 bucks is kinda high, look around online, ive seen em cheaper, if your in a hurry though 90$ aint that terribly bad..

just checked pricewatch, see em for around 65+ plus shipping..

hehe oh well we called mediacom and they said a guy is coming tuesday to install! we already bought the router yesterday. We're gonna rent the modem from them for $5 a month. We were gonna buy the modem bought it would be the equivalant of renting it for 2.5 years. this way we can cancell and save the money if DSL comes to us.
