Im an idiot, really i am when it comes to connections and setting things up. i just leave my brother to do it.

Ok heres the situation, i need to connect the xbox 360 that i just bought, up in my room except i have no TV but i do have this nice 20inch monitor which will do perfect, i really really dont want to shell out hundreds on a new tv :(

    I have this monitor:NEC MultiSync® LCD20WGX2 20.1 :

Im thinking of hooking up my xbox to this monitor but my monitor only seems to have a DVI cable input and some other connector, it looks like a VGA input but im not sure, heres a pic:

Now the question is, i did some searching and found this connector:

    http://hardware.teamxbox.com/reviews/xbox-360/40/Xbox-360-VGA-HD-AV-Cable/p2/
Xbox 360 VGA HD AV Cable
Will this do the trick? or do i need something eles?

please forgive me for being a total retard :waah:

it would do for the video. you'd obviously need some kind of speaker set up as well. The pictures show phonos which could easily be connected to an amp, or converted to a 3.5mm stereo jack for other connectivity options.

So that cable will be fine to connect to my monitor?

from the small amount of research I just performed, the genuine MS product comes with adapters allowing you to connect to different audio solutions.

The speakers you stated don't return a hit, I think the name may be wrong.

The cable will connect to your monitor on the DV-15S connector (the blue d-sub connector), although from what I can tell, the monitors resolution isn't listed in the 360's dashboard, and therefore you can't take full advantage - and I qoute:

"The negative of this, (and it's a BIG negative) is as of the time this review was written, microsoft does not support the 1680X1050 resolution that most 22" monitors have as the max resolution they can display. You will have to select a lower resolution and have your monitor stretch the image. This can result in some distortion of the image . If you have a 24" lcd that supports 1900X1200 (aka 1080p), this is a must buy, otherwise, you may want to wait until microsoft supports 1680X1050."

    Ahhh quick question!

I have a VGA to DVI convertor, would that help the situation? Im thinking of connecting via DVI using the connector, im wondering if it will help this resolution issue at all?

im thinking of connecting the VGA input into the convertor and that goes right back into my dvi port - will this help?

    also another question! sorry:

is it possible to connect my xbox to my pc and have the xbox use my pc's wireless internet connection to play on live? or must i buy that goddam wireless adaptor?

To connect your 360 to your monitor (the only official methods for connecting are VGA, Component, S-Video, or HDMI on the newer models) you are going to need a VGA cable.

The resolutions that you can do are 640×480, 848×480, 1024×768, 1280×720, 1280×768, 1280×1024, 1360×768, and 1920×1080, so on a 20" wide you will have to run at less than native. This setting is changed directly via the 360 and will not affect how your PC looks when connected, the resolutions are independent of one another, which I guess is what you are asking on that front.
If your PC is connected via DVI then you will be able to have both connected at the same time (however you will have to select which one you see via the monitor) and should not have to switch cables to see the other input.

In relation to the audio you have 2 options, optical (5.1) output which would need to be passed to a suitable device capable of decoding the audio and passing it to speakers, OR you can use the 2 phono outputs and connect it to something capable of receiving a stereo source, usually something like a hi-fi.

Your speakers, are they http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=4&subcategory=25&product=10814 ?
If so then it looks like you may be in luck as that particular unit has a pass through for aux sources such as mp3 players, you would simply need a couple of female-to-female phono connectors and a phono to 3.5mm jack cable to use this feature.
Simply connect the 2 adaptors to the 2 phonos on the VGA cable, then connect the Phono->3.5mm to these adaptors then connect it to your speaker systems aux in then set your source on the speakers to aux and you should get sound.

That SHOULD make sense with a little luck :p

Don't use the DVi converter as it wont do anything to help you, just keep it with the normal VGA connection as regards to what rez to play at, well with my 20.1" Viewsonic i use 1280x720. Its perfectly adequate as its full 720p rez which our monitors can handle.

With your speaker system and monitor, all you need the the official MS VGA cable which you linked to earlier. Your 360 will plug straight into the VGA port of your monitor. For the sound, the official MS cable comes with an adaptor to convert the 2 phone plugs into a 3.5mm stero jack which will plug into your speaker kit mentioned above.

    http://images.americas.creative.com/images/products/inline/10814-subback_1_1_61.jpg

Your sorted and no extra cables or nothing is needed if you get the official MS cable.

I have this cable and used it on my CRT 19" monitor and now using it int he VGA port of my LCD TV.

Sorry if I'm being a bit basic with my explanation but I've got no idea how much you know so I thought it best to explain everything than to leave you confused :p It's probably just reiterating what others have said.

Since you have the elite, you might want to ditch the VGA method and buy a HDMI to DVI connector, MS have also said that they're working on updating the number of resolutions that the VGA cable supports. This will probably appear in the fall update, however, if your monitor is able to upscale like the bells and whistles 24" dell is able to then you don't have to worry too much about it not supporting your natural res. I'm not familiar with your model so I have no idea if it can do this (a quick google seems to point it not being able to), the HDMI method only works properly AFAIK if your monitor can upscale.

As others have said, to get the audio working you can either plug the audio cables into a stereo, or use the RCA to 3.5mm jack MS provides with it's VGA cable (I recommend you get the official one as it is the best quality, many people have reported problems with third party cables) and plug that into the line in if your PC has one, if you don't know it's a blue port if your PC is nicely colour coded that looks like a speaker port. If not you could plug it into the mic port. Or as others have said, plug it into the line in thingy of your speakers, that would probably be the best way. You'll probably need an extension cable for this which is just a female to male 3.5mm cable.

As for connecting it to the internet, there's a different method from antanu's one he posted in the other thread so if you can't get that one working give me a PM and I'll post the other method. I think you need XP pro for this though, not sure what versions of vista can do this.

Since you are behind a router you will need to open a few ports to give your 360 unhindered access to xbox live. You can connect to xbox live without doing this though, but sometimes you won't be able to connect to some people, I didn't see any effect until I attempted to play Halo 2 online with a few buddies, I couldn't join the party of one of my friends because of this. I say that because you might not want to do it as to make it a permanently solution requires changing the settings on the router quite a lot, otherwise you have to quite frequently (not every 5 minutes or anything like that though) go into your router to change the settings.

I've got the Microsoft dongle and it did work pretty well (while my wireless router was working) and was extremely easy to set-up.
The other option is a wireless bridge (connects to the 360 eithernet port) although I think you'd have to connect it to a PC first to set it up before transferring it to the 360.

The sound isn't transfered through the VGA cable, it's transfered through either the red and white RCA cables attached to the vga cable or the black optical socket on the VGA cables AV adapter going into the 360 (extra cable needed for optical).

    You have 3 options:
    • You'll need a seperate amp or reciever and you'll need to plug the red and white RCA cables into the sockets on your amp.
    • plug an optical cable into the A/V socket and into a seperate amp
    • Plug the Red and White RCA cables into the adapter which should have come with the VGA cable which will give you a 3.5mm earphone adapter type plug which you can plug into the line-in on your soundcard or amp.
