Educational discount is available online. HE discount has to be through a proper purchase order (even though the prices are online)

Ahh ffs. I thought that's what people have been saying is the whole point of Mactels and the only problem was getting Tiger on a non Apple PC. I need windows because some programs wont be avaliable for OSX yet. Fine, i'll use Vista when it arrives.

I dont want a 3.6kg, 17" DTR Dell. I want OSX for office and web, and windows for everything else. I need a backlit keyboard for working in a darkroom where the CCD is sensitive to overhead lighting.

I dont pay for this, my strippend does for my sponcered studentship. I dont have to fill in any forms, I just tell my Prof what I want and why :)

whats wrong with IBM laptops? they rock!
im waiting for a latitude core duo myself, should be nice :cooldude:

i dunno about iLife06 but MS Office for mac doesnt have a universal binary version so it runs using that emulation thingy-ma-wotsit on intel macs and apparently it really sucks, ie its barely usable

Don't know where you got that from hamish , all the reports of rossetta were very good.

Only problem with it is that it really needs more ram than 512mb when running things like photoshop.

I find IBM lappys look naff and I dont want a PPC lappy either. There's more software out on x86 and there will be far more software ported over in due time. The only Dell Core Duo lappys out atm are 17" jobbies which weigh in at 3.6kg! :eeek:

There is no such thing as a nice dell.

And if you think an IBM laptop is going to look as sleek as a Power/MacBook, think again.

    lol

keep yer knickers on, i was just kidding, he made a stupid fanboyish comment so i replied in kind, you appear to have missed that it was in jest

and for the record, in much the same way as 'go faster stripes' dont actually make your car go faster, white plastic does not make your computer any better ;)

    I know :)

No, I know just because something looks great, doesn't mean its powerful. But I'd rather have a laptop that looked nice than a laptop that looked like something out of the stone age.

But, this thread isn't about IBM's disgusting laptops.

ME!? Fanboi! Get your facts straight. Im sitting here USING A Dell. It's pretty decent but it's no Mac lappy with Tiger. I dont like the look or how IBM's are, that's just personal choice.

A 1.86Ghz core duo is pretty fast, sure, it's no "Uber leet mhz X2" or whatever, but it's still pretty nice. Nor do I want PPC, period. I dont care if it's faster or not than the IBM chips.

wtf, i was talking to sam0r not you, ya nutter :p

i really dont care what a laptop looks like, performance and just about every other feature is more important than appearance for me
a 2gig core duo thinkpad or latitude would rock, my work laptop is a pentium m latitude and its nice but not dual core :p

i'd take an ibm or dell over a mac even if they had the same hardware/os but thats just personal choice because i've had bad experience with mac build quality

Since looks are opinions, I'll keep thinking the same thing I always thought -- IBM products are sexy. Also, Dell make rather nice portables, and nothing beats a Dell display for functionality, quality, and sleekness. Also, their desktops win for pre-built, as they're priced very well.

Also, I'd rather have a laptop that looks nice AND performs well, not one or the other. Same with everything else I own. But if I'm gonna spend the dosh, I'd prefer something that performs over something that looks nice on a shelf.

Just because you're an elitest prick doesn't mean the rest of the world are.

    AH LOL :D

Laptops I DO care what it looks like. My PC, I dont care.

This lappy is a 1.7M with a gig of ram, and doing 1 thing it's great but try to get it to do 2 things and it craps out.

Have you seen IBM's Z series laptops with Titanium finish, IBM is going through a face lift after being purchased by Lenovo China. In fact the new IBM media series laptops are some of the best looking PC in the market also some of the most expensive. The only laptop to rival IBM's Z series is Acer's Ferrari series in style, Mac's aren't the only pretty boys in town anymore.

    :jawdrop:

    IBM/Lenovo = Fugly

    Acer Ferrari = Tacky

Apple = 100% Design Perfection (no awful stickers smooth lines and have you seen how the little hook to keep the lid closed down is magneticly opened?)

I'm no fanboy, in fact I'd prefer a windows box to a proprietary apple computerm but you can't class any other designers with apple.

The one thing that always amazes me with apple stuff is the packaging, they package items like no other company , its truely a work of art sometimes.

Okay the IBM/Lenovo thing I can understand, but how can you diss the pure gangsta styles of the Ferrari.
Com'on gayish silver looking wannabe artsy graphics designer Titanium ala Mac versus Ganstga Jet Black Carbon Fiber Alloy with Black Race Car Rubber Interior Ferrari.
I take the Jet Black Ferrari over the girly silver Mac any day, now if Mac's decided to ever make a latop in the same Jet Black finish as they're Ipod than thats a different story. But until then I still say Ferrari takes the cake on badassness.
