My wife still refers to "taping" TV programmes even though it's to hard drive. So what's the specific word for recording to HDD?

Language must evolve. Answers on a postcard.

Recording? TiVoing is used often enough, but that's like using the word "iPodding" for listening to music (thankfully I've yet to hear that one).

Alternatively, buy a tape drive for your computer.

I'd go for recording as well, seems to be what I use most often. As TiVo didn't dominate the market over here we don't get that much at all.

Isn't this the 3rd millennium though? :worried:

'Recording' is too general; we've been recording since wax cylinders. We've had taping, we've got burning to optical, one day we'll be flashing to SSD, missing word...

    My watch is slow.

    "I'm bitting it..."

:hehe: should probably get that checked out somewhere.

Well if taping was magnetising a tape then maybe to a hard drive should be plattering..."Darling could you platter Eastenders for me?"

    Maybe not.

lol I think if I heard someone say iPodding I would lose it.

Anyways, back on topic. I would say recording.

Recording is really the only suitable word to use.

    "discing"?

    I would go for "Recording".

Oh, and people who say "iPodding" should be punched very hard in the face. :wallbash:

How about a cryptical STMBWITF (save to maybe be watched in the future)? Don't everyone love these?

Save/record.. Although those are both rather boring. I'd like to see a genuinely new word, but I guess my english skills are too limited for coming up with anything good.

Storing would probably be the most appropriate word but it really isn't that exciting. I quite like the use of nostalgic words for something more advanced. It's almost like how everyone calls a vacuum cleaner a hoover even though the word hoover was originally a brand name. It just kinda stuck.

Although, I would personally say backing up my brain. Which is also my excuse for occasionally downloading films. I've seen em in the cinema, so what I'm technically doing is backing up my memory just in case I need to restore to an earlier point in time.

"Sky Plussing/Sky Pluss'd" over here, seeing as TiVo never took off (well Sky killed to to introduce Sky+)

    I generally just say Recording/Recorded.

In my line of work, a lot of people still affectionately refer to videotaping something as "filming" it. I just use recording. It's nice and generic, so it's multi-functional. Specifically regarding my television, sometimes I use the acronym "DVR" as a verb (i.e. I'll DVR that show tonight.).

Record and Tape are the most used words, wether it be recording it to a DVD or HDD, my parents do say sometimes "Can you tape that program for me", but my brother will say "Record that film for me would ya".

Depends what era your from I suppose.

well if Burning is to optical,
    and flashing is to SSD.

    then hows about
Magnatising! considering thats exactly what your doing with current (non flash based) hard drives.

LAGMonkey, I was just about to be all clever and suggest magnetizing, but you beat me to it. Oh well.

    i say "torrenting" :worried:

generally hear "tivoing" used to mean recording from tv to digital storage, but i don't like it. "recording" is a nice, medium-independent word that both dvr and vcr users can understand.
