    Hey all,

Having used my macbook for a while and really enjoying the pluspoints of OSX, I'm thinking of taking advantage of the student discount and getting a nice iMac to replace the dell system in my sig. Question is, I could either get super-decent 20" iMac, or a 15.4" MBP both for roughly the same price. Considering I have a Macbook, would it be worth buying a MBP or an iMac?

    Cheers!

Get an imac, and keep the macbook, personnaly i dont think (speed wise) there is that much difference between the macbook and macbookpro. I just dont think the pros arent worth the money.

I'd say get the iMac, both for the added screen size and having a proper desktop. I've got a MBP and while it's a great machine for the most part (although honestly, there are some REALLY stupid design flaws in that sort of Apple-esque form over functionality; though I find they're true on the MacBooks as well), I can't stand not having a proper desktop machine anymore. The iMac has a bigger and faster hard drive in it as well, which is always a plus.

hah, you obviously don't own one then :p

BUT since you already have a macbook i would be inclined to agree with the above advice of keeping it and going with macbook. unless you need 3d accel on the go?

I'd just sell the dell and get a external monitor say a 20in dell. Hook the macbook upto it and use a keyboard/mouse and you have the iMac pretty much.

Far cheaper and you get to have the best of both worlds with very little performance difference.

Unless you want to play any games. I don't think the macbook could run any games at native resolution on a 20" display.

If they have the same CPU, there is no difference between the two laptops. Get the imac TBH.

the primary differences between MBP and MB are the graphics and screen, the MB has integrated graphics and a 13" screen, the MBP has a graphics processor and a 15.4" or 17" screen

processor, memory, hard drive, optical drive wise, they're pretty much the same

Not if you wear a watch with a metal band. Mine's scratched to oblivion there.

Yeah, I'd have to have a meaty graphics card because I currently use the dell to play the Sims 2 on... and it hates it... far too slow!

I reckon the iMac would probably be the way to go too; considering the macbook can run sims 2 fine using its intel GFX at native res (surprising, i know!), plus i've upgraded the macbook to 2GB RAM, and given it a 120GB HDD, so I reckon it's gutsy enough for everything portable I want to do. Not a massive games player, and I would have got an MBP originally if it wasn't for the dinky size and small weight of the MB (size was a primary concern when i bought it, seemed the best spec small laptop whilst also having a plus of being able to run FCP)

Go for the MacBook, simply because it will stop you playing Sims 2.

Macbook pro does look nicer, but the macbook is still a spangly thing.

I honestly don't think the MBP looks that much better, though I do like the improved speakers, and gimmicky light up keyboard. Screen size is neither here nor there tbh, since apple brought out the MB13's, the screen resolution has matched those of most 15" PC laptops!

Unrealhippie - shush! lol i love that game!
