I rented Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater today and dang is it a great game. I must say that the learning curve is quite high and you need ALOT of pacients to play the game, since when your spotted you usually have to wait atleast 2-3 minutes for the caution warning to go back down. But lets start at the beginning, in the first level you are dropped off and sent to rescue someone (this is a spoiler free impression :D), it took me a while but once you get the hang of it you can head shot pretty well. Its kind of hard since in the jungle these guards blend VERY well into the background. Now, no radar right? Wrong! There is a primited radar, which is simple a sonor and a movement detector (Which is a piece of cr^p). But the sonar detector is very usefull as you can simply press a button and learn where animals/enemies are (there of course not marked and are all the same yellow dot to make it harder ^_^).

Now, since i've covered aiming and whatnot i'll get into the weapons. You start out with a little tranqualizer gun and through this stage and the next you may find it quite hard (even for a MGS expert) since of course there is NO little red dot to know where your shot it going. Once you get into the higher levels you'll get the regular weapons, shotguns, M37's/Ak-47's, and grenades. All the weapons feel kind of..different, it could be because of the body armor but most of your enemies are pretty tough (3-7 shots center mass and below kills them, and of course one shot to the head and there dead). Not only are the enemies hard to kill..so are you, you can be riddled with bullet holes! and i mean litteraly..as your going to have to patch them up!.

That leads me onto the repair portion, i thought it would get repetetive and a pain in the butt to go to the start menu and cure everytime you got injured, BUT after a while it becomes pretty easy and you can do it very quickly. You'll have to cure everything from leaches to broken bones.

Now for the biggest part of the game (atleast in my opinion) is the camo. It is great! i have say i really like this feature and it is pretty easy to go to the menu and change into something more suitible for your terrain. Enemies can spot you if you wear the wrong camo..but if you change quickly and hide you can usually escape there eye and get a cool little "Hmm..i must be seeing things" out of them.

Sound, especially on a 5.1 system is downright great, from bullets to cutscenes to speech really sounds great, especially on a surround system. BUT one thing i do have to gripe with is early on in the game (i might of gotten use to it by now) the voices sound like there reading from a sheet into a microphone rather than talking to eachother. They did a bad job chopping the voices together, not to mention out of sync with the lips (which could be just my 4 year old ps2 :D).

Alittle in detail for the graphics, the cutscenes are downright beautifull to look at and they've added in a little R1 feature that you can press at certain points to view a different part of the cut scene such as looking at a womans half bare chest...OR looking through the binoculars at what snake is seeing in the cut scene. Everything seems polished other than some backgrounds that seem a bit pixilated and out of date. Of course i must warn you, the cut scenes are long! VERY long, and if your not into sitting down for 5 minutes watching some in-game video..you might get bored sometimes.

OH and before i get, the food. You can get various things from mushrooms to snakes to crocodiles and chop em up for laters food. This increases your stamina and therefor increases how much life you gain back (low stamina, low ability to gain life). Any questions? Just post and i'll see if i can awnser it. Btw..this is just my impressions, might not be the same as yours and i probly left out alot of stuff (and alot of stuff there is! O_O)as i have been playing it for dang near 5 or 6 hours straight and still playing while i am typing this!

Edit: I forgot a few of the finer details, when you hold a gun in first person view if you are standing up the gun will bounce around in your shaky grasp, if you crouch or crawl it will steady your hand. When your running up stairs you actually get a fluid movement of him on each step instead of just running down them (A true treat to watch) AND he actually push's open doors if you walk into them lightly OR if you run into one it will fly open, possibly knocking someone down on the other side. The D-pad is used for steady walking, which can or cannot be used ( I havnt touched it and have gotten along fine with just lightly pressing the analog stick in any direction). Those are some little things to look forewards if you play! Not to mention all the secrets hidden under and around things. I love this game so far.

That sounds very cool. Big fan of the MGS series

Pity us in the UK WONT GET TO PLAY IT UNTIL MARCH!! :miffed: I mean it's nearly as bad as the Final Fantasy's and their release dates in europe. Hell, we get a few special features...boss battle mode :eeek:, and the making of dvd, which'll get watched once. But do they make up for it?

Ah well, gives me some time to finish San Andreas 100%

Yeah i'm a huge fan of MGS too, and it sucks that you've already got it.
    I want I want.

EDIT: oh and that R1 trick, can be done in MGS2

He he he he.... I own it and have already beaten it on the hardest difficulty. God bless the U.S. !!

Anyways, this game facking rules. OMFG!! Not to spoil anything, but heres a little teaser for you whom don't have it yet...

I am crawling through the jungle. Camo index is at 95% (Leaf camo w/woodland face-paint) when I see two guards patroling up ahead. I sneak up on the first guard and get him in a head lock. As I do this his buddy hears me interogating him and turns around. I use the first guard as a human shield, shoot the second guard in the face then slit the first guards throat all within a matter of 3 seconds.

Words cannot describe how awesome this game is. Now to go for the highest rating possible and beat the game in under 4 hours....

I thought the PS2 can only do 5.1 during cutseens and movies, not during actual game play. Am I wrong?

Actually in game is pretty awsome in 5.1 too. There is a part where you are climbing up a hill to meet someone and you can hear helicopters fly to your right/left either infront of behind you.

The seemingly most reliable date for release is the 11th March ( :miffed: :sigh: )

Yeah, the PS2 can do 5.1 in game sas well. Another good example of this is in Need For Speed Undergroud: 2. Youcan hear cars moving around behind you. KillZone is freaking awesome in 5.1. Gunships flying around, bullets whizzing all over the place. Sah-wee-eet-ness! :thumb:
