I've just bought an mp3 player that states it requires a power supply of DC 5V 1.5A. Would it be ok to use the 15W car adapter from maplins? The adapter info is here.

The cigarette lighter adapter has an output current of 300mA, 500mA and 1200mA. And an output voltage of 3, 6, 9 and 12Vdc.

Just want to make sure they will be compatable. Cheers.

I would say probably not, as you need 1.5A and it's only outputting 1200mA (max)... it might work though as it's not too much different.

there aren't any walmarts in the UK, although Walmart have taken over the UK chain ASDA. Might have a look, but their probably unlikely to stock it.

I'm not sure if the 1200ma is selectable, it may only be used if the 12v setting is selected, which is too high.

What MP3 player do you have, and are you going to connect it to the car stereo, or use headphones?

I got one of those Maplin PSUs a few years ago. I used to use it to run a pocket TV.

    Cheers

The MP3 player is one that I won on ebay. see link.

I'm intending to connect it to the car stereo via one of those tape converters that plug in to the headphone socket.

    Cheers

Just read the ebay link. It says you can use a lower rating than 1.5A, but it won't charge as quick. This sounds right. If you use a lower amperage it will help to prolong the battery life, assuming it is already charged, but will not run it if the battery is flat.

I got an Archos Jukebox, but I cannot use it in my car as I have a CD player- no tape slot for the adaptor. I tried an FM modulator, but the quality was awful- loads of hiss.

    Cheers

I've just got an old cavalier (G reg), with the original tape deck. So i'm using that, don't really fancy having to splash out on a new mp3 stereo unit.

I have a Company car (Mondeo 2 litre Zetec), so I cannot mess about with it. I never thought I would miss having a tape player!

At one point I thought about getting a £400 - £800 hard drive based mp3 player, but the insurance would only cover 15% of the cars value for stereo equipment. Which means I wouldnt even get £100 back, if the stereo was stolen!

Would I need to use the 3V or could I get away with using 6V without damaging the circuit??

3V will not work at all. The DC voltage going in needs to be higher than the voltage of the battery to charge it. 6V might be OK, it depends on the charging circuit in the player.

Just a thought, but do you actually need to charge the player in the car? I would think you should get at least 5 hours usage before you need a recharge. Do you have a mains charger for the player? If not, it will probably be easier to get a mains charger of the right spec.

    Cheers

I'm currently using a multi adapter wall charger. Running at 4.5V and 1200mA. I was hoping to use the car charger as sometimes I'm out for most of the day in the car.

I think I'll have to look at gettng the correct wall charger, and will keep my eye on an in car charger at 5v 1500mA.
