Electronics In need of some help building EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) generator

No, the EMP weapons they're considering using only have an effective range of tens of meters. Still, that should be quite sufficient. Even if they're in a hardened underground bunker, they've almost certainly got power lines, etc going in into them, and those are hard to protect adequately.

You can do it with capacitors. I've built a coilgun and I'm in the process of building a real railgun (we're talking power levels in the range 4kJ). The capacitors for the coilgun are more than capable of crushing cans and erasing hard drives (with magnetic coils), so i can imagine that wired right they could produce quite a hefty EM pulse.

 

leet_llama do you happen to have any plans/drawings of how to build a rail gun as I have also been getting interested in rail guns lately? With all of my searching for plans to build my EMP generator I keep running into links for rail guns but with no plans can you send me some plans if you have any??? Also if you have have the time could you tell me or send me plans of how you built your coil-gun?

 

Me wonders why you would need such a thing... Well, erasing HDDs is such a minor task (trash compactors work great for destroying computer evidence ) so his real goal is his first example. Crushing cans. That aluminium is such a bother to crush into a decent sized lump of crap (okay, actually a lump of aluminium). Hmm... Maybe he is trying to make a ghetto heatsink and submit his article to afrotech mods?

 

Does he need a reason to want to such a thing? things like that ROCK!!!

I read awhile back the "coils" you need can be found in the back of an old microwave oven.

Anyone see the new version of Ocean's Eleven? (the old one was better) They built an EMP thing in the back of a van or something like that if memory serves me right.

I also remember that an EMP gun can only be used once because for the EMP to radiate or be created or something, an explosion (a small one I guess) had to be created, thus destroying the device when detonated.

 

Some EMP devices can be used just once most can be used as many times as needed and create a large surge (kilovolts) of electricity that is ran through tightly wound coils creating a pulse of electromagnetic energy. This large amount of energy is generated, then stored in large capacitors called: pulse caps, these capacitors can release all of their power instantaniously at the flip of a switch or push of a button.

 

The kind of EMP you are thinking of is a self-detonating EMP which yes can only be used once, after which the it auto self-destructs leaving no evidence to be found except burned metal shrapnel of course

Try surplus stores. I got lucky and asked my electronics shop - they gave me 10 inverter grade 4700 uF pulse caps for £0.30 a piece

dont know about an EMP gen. but you can make EMP gernades. it genorates an EMP field, but it requiers some sort of explosive either gun powder or other. I wont go into the designs for them cuz i doubt bit tech wants that kind of thing on their board.

you might be able to build an EMP gen with a series of large Caps and fire them in sequence. let all of them charge up and then use some sort of control chip to discharge them one at a tiome to a coil. the key is to have the caps fire off and then charge so that when the last cap is discharged the first one is charged back up again. so the first discharges starts to chrage the second discharges statrs to charge third discharges starts to chrage the first is fully charged and discharges starts to charge second is charged and discharges ETC ETC and it continues. this way you have a rapidly fluctuating EMP field.

it would be handy to have in a computer you keep secure/confidential information on so if the computer is removed by an unauthorized person the EMP device fires and wipes out all you information and fries the hardware so noone can steal your files or hardware. HMMMMM i should think about installing one of those to keep my work private.

 

If you wanted to go the whole way you could create a super-conducting electromagnet similar to the ones that are used in MRI scanners. These generate HUGE magnetic fields, enough to make one of those hospital oxygen cylinders fly across the room.
Maybe a modded vapoChill or similar could be used for cooling.
This wouldn't create a EMP which are only truly created shortly after a huge nuclear fission from a nuclear bomb
