Ive been running this for about 7months.

Since putting in my 6800GT the temps have increased significantly. My 3200XP cpu temp is about 56C all the time so the fan is on full.

Ive replaced the stock case cover with the black mesh one and Im about to replace the sunon 80mm fan with a Noiseblocker S4.

Ive got a syrnge of AS5 and AS3 still, so I was wondering whether to clean the CPU and reapply some new AS5.

On applying AS5 anyone got some good advice. Ive normally been putting 1/3 garin of rice and then spreading it across the surface of cpu until level.

Is this right, is there a better method to ensure Im getting the best use out of the stuff.

    Hi Jon
Did you get the cable ok
as regards to your temps I did the same as you a grain of as5 however i was moving them about a lot swapping from one to the other and niticed temps crept up reseated with a bit more than a thin scrape and temps down to about 40 degrees

I shaved off about 3 degrees from 51 to 48 (load) when changing from AS3 to AS5. I used 99% isopropyl to clean it off making sure not to get any on the components! If you do it'll probably f**k up. I'm running the same CPU and graphics card but I need to run with the case off. I'm planning a mod with an arctic cooler so the hot air is blown out the side. The XP is good up to 65 degrees I think so it should be fine, maybe consider a 120mm fan mod if the ICE fan runs too loud for your liking (run mine at 2% all the time - that's 850rpm).

    Hi,

Cable didnt turn up, but Im a bit dubious about my current flatmates which is why I dont leave anything in the flat.

So for time being I cut the trailing 2nd plug off a rounded cable I had and although not a perfect fit, it'll do.

If you used a bit more than a thin scrape (I guess across the whole chip) how thick do you reckon you smeared it?

    Thanks for the info scotty.

I bought the mesh cover, so I didnt have to run with the cover off, plus I carry my PC every day so need it protected and it would be a pain to have to keep putting on and removing the cover.

Cant really go with a 120mm fan mod for the same reason (wouldnt fit in the shuttle bag).

Thats why I got the noiseblocker fan as th sunon is quite noisy and after 7months mine is quite dusty. In fact looking at the fan its one of the dirtiest Ive seen and especially after only 7months

You may be able to modify a 92mm internal if you really wanted to but the 80 seems to be doing you good. I might get the SP60 bag so I can carry mine to London (too scared to put it in my travel case :sigh: ). I'd seriously invest in a can of compressed air - that dust is probably why you're getting higher temps than me as with the case on and a 5900XT fitted I get idle temps of 45 degrees and load of 49.

If you have either a dremel like tool or a pair of tin snips, i'd recommend that you cut out the back grill. It will lower your temp by a few degrees and will lower your noise.

Well put the S4 fan in place and reapplied the AS5 and guess what its back at 55C again.

Think I may not be applying the AS5 correctly so not getting good temps. I used to do a lot better with AS3.

Think I might get some of those Akasa TIMS as you cant screw up putting those on.

Also if you can spare the PCI slot put a PCI exhaust unit in. I put one i and it lowered my idle temp from 52 to 45-46 so it seems worthwhile.

Hmm, those blowers are also noisy though. Try using isopropyl alsohol to clean off the CPU and ICE assembly again very carefully. Then reapply the AS5, not too much and spread it over the core with a credit card. Replace the ICE heatsink then take it off and you should see a square shaped print of AS5. If not then apply some more and try again. AS5 is said to take up to 200 hours to fully work it's way in so give it time but as I said before, the temps seem fine, a little high but fine. What are your temps like with the fan at 100%?

It's most likely the 6800GT is putting the heat into the case causing it to re-circulate the hot air. I'd try something like a Panaflo L1A with an 80mm conversion.

Temps have dropped slightly. Noticed last night the cpu is now hovering about 52-53c so I guess i'll see over the next few days how the AS5 takes
