So my new phone arrived today, and like any good bit-techer I immediately broke out my mini-driver set (takes a T5 to get into its guts) and I've measured up very, very carefully. If I'm very, very careful in removing material from the case back, there's just enough space (1.4mm extra even) to fit one of powermats tm powercubes tm (or rather the guts thereof) into the case back. With a little bit of milling on a piece of the interior shell material I can run a couple of wires and solder to the tails of the USB socket. All good so far; we have the technology, we can rebuild him better than he was before... but will there be any sort of interference to any of the associated wireless technologies? And there in lies the problem, I just don't know. Am I asking for trouble trying to give one of nokias high end perks to a low/mid product?
I always have a T5 handy because, like you, I'm a tinkerer xD Good luck, sounds interesting, curious to see your result.
It's probably the 3rd best feature on my 920, so good luck installing it for the express way lazy charging
Well one thoroughly chopped up and soldered together powercube later and I can report that the phone will make calls and both send and receive txt messages and e-mails. I can only assume that it'll make calls but no-one ever calls me (forever alone?) Phase one is a (horrible black electrical tape bodge of a) success. Thickness of phone with back, 12mm, thickness of phone without back but with inductive charger 11.25mm... it's going to be closer than I thought...
Double post, but what the hell... Gahhhhh, the flash, it burns my eyes! The currently ugly back, don't worry about the overlapping, the second disc (they were both stacked and soldered P2P) will have its excess area which is currently under the inductive loop trimmed off. And..... charging....
Any luck soldering the wire from the discs directly to the micro USB jack without the roundabout cable, asura?
Not yet; I've just finished (yesterday) cutting the pcb on the controller disc down to its minimum size so that it stands a chance of all fitting in. I've since purchased a second back, so that if I fail miserably at routing out a void for the two pieces then I'm not walking around with a mangled phone. Once I have a successfully integrated inductive charging loop and case-back, I'll then tackle the warranty ruining procedure... Doing the milling means having a quiet hour or so at work, so I expect to get around to it some time in 2047 In all seriousness, probably next Thursday/Friday, then we get to see how steady my hands really are
Don't forget that the Lumia 620 is designed so the back cover is a 'feature'. Nokia would like you to buy a few different backs for it so the phone fits your mood/clothes. At least if you shave too much off the back you can get a replacement simply enough.
I love the wireless charging on my 920, definitely wouldn't go back to a phone without it now! Oh and nice mod!
