    hi
im starting my case study for advanced higher technology and it is a comparison between normal HDD and SSD. i have looked at howstuffworks and wikipedia aswell as having a read of an article here on bit-tech. how stuff works has info that is oldish as it says the average pc has 10-40GB HDD and not much on SSD.
i was wondering if you know a good place to get information or if you could send me any.

i also need information about the materials used

    thanks in advance.

google "NAND flash". That's the tech used in SSDs. the fundamental tech used in HDDs hasn't really changed much bar different bearing tehcnologies and faster motors/more cache, although you may want to research perpendicular recording a little, as well as maybe discuss the differences between PATA/SATA.

    Any information in particular?
Advantages/disadvantages? If so I'd say the biggest advantages of SSD is that they are faster, and because they have no moving parts are less prone to damage. However, they are more expensive and have a limited number of write operations (not sure about numbers though and therefore how much of a problem this is)

The write limit isn't a problem. The number is pretty big and the firmware constantly moves the location of bits written so one bit isn't written to more often.
It'll last longer than a HDD, that's for sure.
A disadvantage is that data density is not as high as magnetic storage.

the study basically has 2000 words to describe the 2 items in as much detail as possible and then 500 at the end to compare the features.

im fairly sure about the info for the comparison so its mainly the main description of the devices.

Well I think wikipedia would be a good starting place and then the external links on the articles.

unless you have to state where you got your information from. I don't know about you, but we aren't allowed to use Wiki as a source as it isn't factual (so to speak)

A good Wiki article has references at the bottom (how did you not notice?).

Look up manufacturer websites. Most will probably have white papers with detailed technical information about the technologies used. Certainly when I did Advanced Higher that was the level of reference they expected for top marks. Of course you need to ensure that it is balanced and unbiased (unlikely if it mentions lots of trademarked technologies!) so see check if there any aritcles that disagree with the conclusions.
