i was woundering if its possible it make a remote start system with an infra red setup... ive seen remote starts done with door bells but im curious if it can be done with infra red...?

should be simple... depends on how "secure" you want it... You could just connect a photodiode on the mobo pins for the power switch... However this will make it sense all cinds of IR light. And it will turn on with any cind of IR light. The problem is that if it get signals when the comp. is already turned on it will turn of again :duh:

This could be solved with a couple of resistors and a wire from the +5v supply...

If you want it to react on a spesiffic signal from a spesiffic remote it will get a bit harder...

it would be better if it would react to only the remote button...

I"ve seen mods where someone used a doorbell to mod a switch, but an IR phototransistor and an IR LED would work, but i would modulate the signal to prevent random startups.

Oscillator (this would be the remote)

this would be the receiver (instead of the red LED, connect in parallel with the power switch)

if I'm not mistaken, the Sharp GP1U5X IR Detect Module could be used as the receiver. connect Vcc and Gnd to their proper locations, and output to a transistor (you'd have to figure NPN (High) or PNP (low), it should tell you what the output does when it's activated.)

if you need any more help i'd be glad to help as much as i can :thumb:

so those 2 circuits should make it work???

if so ill have to make a list of parts and look around for them..

i think i get the shematics.... never have neem good at reading them.. :( i usally get by tho..

also the only problem with infra red is that u have to have line of sight with the 2 devices... and with those door bells u can be quite a distance for it to still work..

    download ExpressPCB

i'll have a present for you in a little while...

what voltage/current do the power switches handle?

ok ive only been able to look at the scematic in more detail...as ive been a bit busy lately..

looking at the reciever... i no its for a "infrared" tester.. but wouldnt i just be able to wire up the infra red reciever straight to the power switch? i dont think it really need power does it? the motherboard supplies a little bit of power throught the contacts for it to start up...???

im not a total electronics wizard so i dont no exactly what is what.. :( but i no my basics (sorta)

yes i did thanks for that...

i was just thinking about the design of that circuit.. im not sure that it would need that power... i think its mainly for the LED?

if you're talking about the IC and LED's on the remote, remember that it's +5V, meaning you can have +2.5V, the LED's are in parallel, so they draw whatever voltage and their own current, and the 555 needs some power to operate.

    three AAA's in series will do the trick (1.5V X 3 = 4.5V)

worst that'll happen is you'll need to sacrifice a molex

ps, maybe just get a slice, like what are on the end of fans, plug molex in unit, plug unit into drive

mpja.com has a kit for making this, they say that the distance is pretty good, you'll be able to start the PC from your front door when you walk in. maybe from the driveway
