    I think I have a problem

My GPU (a 2600xt untill my 4850 & PSU arrive) is reaching incredible temps whilst gaming.
It seems like it rises non-stop, and it's caused my computer to shut itself off multiple times whilst fullscreen.

So i decided to watch the temp of my E4500, 25 normal both cores,
    45 max, under heavy load, (UT3 @ max & COD 2 max)

Then got out CPUID hardware monitor out:

I never had this problem on Vista,
only recently since i've moved back for various reasons (Yuri's Revenge :naughty:)

Now i'm scared to run it for too long without letting the temps lower, in case I kill somthing that i can't afford to replace.

Is there anything i can do to reduce the temps?
Is it possibly my hardware malfunctioning?
Will I keep writing these questions? :p

You could try using riva tuner and forcing the fan to full speed. at those temps it should be full speed but you never know, also you coudl try resetting the cooler with some better paste. and finaly though 106 is hot gpu's run higher and will survive higher, if it plays fine no artifacting then i would't worry to much.

2600xt isn't very expensive and breaking it also gives you an excuse for upgrading :)

although a little high, but i think GPU's are usually this high in temperature, so you are fine

I've ordered my 4850, but it'll take at least two weeks to come
but thanks for the speedy replies, any advice for the random shut-offs?
(i'm reseating the GPU now with some spare stuff i found, let's see the results!)

EDIT: Got a new max temp, 112 :D

106C is high but it shouldn't kill the card - GPUs tend to be fairly forgiving of high temperatures. The fan on my 7800GTX has been a bit dodgy recently and I've seen it hit 119C (eek!) without a problem.

If the whole machine is turning off I'd check out the PSU first. What make/model is it?

    Some No-Name, No-Brand 300w one, thank god i'm upgrading!
I've ordered the Corsair VX550W that I saw on the front page, it looks as if it'll do the job, at least for a while.

On the gaming note, it seems warfare maps in UT3 are the killers, a DM and i get no higher than 90C

EDIT: also, these temps are with the side of the case off, I take it they'll go higher with it on?

The el-cheapo PSU is probably what's causing the shutdowns. Corsairs are generally very good, so hopefully that'll fix your problem.

It depends on the airflow in your case, but generally they will be higher with the side on.

depends on your case's airflow, if you have a fan blowing at the intake of your graphics card, you may get better results with side on.

Revelations: took apart the card cooler, saw the biggest dust-ball in my life
It covered the entire legnth of the heat sink, blocking airflow into, and out of the card. :duh:

I've now completely taken apart the whole PC, CPU, HDD and my card, and given them a savage dusting, far better temps now :D
40C to 58C under high load, thanks for suggesting a good dusting :hehe:

I wouldn't be worried, if it *does* go to high, it'll crash. It won't just burn itself ;)
I've had my old (7900GT) hit 90c before, and did think the same for a sec lol
