    Right

I've managed to get Debian installed to a reasonable level; I have command line access and all *seems* ok. I now want to get KDE running. When installing packages I guessed at installed KDM, to get KDE working as thats what we use in Uni.

Anyone who can tell me how to set it up?

Tried running KDM at the command line but the screen just flickered at me for a while...

You'll need to set up your XF86 settings first, just run xf86config. That'll lead you through a series of questions to get X setup for your graphics card, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. Good luck :)

Doesn't Debian do this on initial install?

Sounds like you MAY have entered some of the info incorrect. As was suggested, try running xf86config from the command line and make sure that you double check what your setting are.

How are you trying to start up X Windows? Are you just typing "startx" or are you throwing in a few switches after?

Sounds like you haven't got your monitor configured correctly. Run xf86config, that's a flat screen isn't it? I know many of those don't do the full range of resolutions supported by a normal monitor, so make sure you select the resolutions supported by your monitor.
