As an addition to the other thread I posted regarding Xubuntu, I seem to have cocked up my video drivers.

I was playing around with synaptic and trying to get it to download the latest drivers and it appears to have killed my GUI :(. I thought now might be the ideal time to install the latest drivers as I'd tried before and failed.

The card is a Nvidia 6200TC so I downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site and then issued a "sudo sh Nvidia..... run" (dots represent filename). The installation started just fine but then failed, as it said something about me not having the correct 'libc headers' :worried:.

Being a linux noob, not too sure what that means or how to solve it. Please bear in mind that I can only use the terminal atm.

    Thanks :thumb:

    UPDATE 1 -PARTLY FIXED:

Used 'sudo apt-get install libc6-dev' and then re-run the Nvidia installer. All seemed to go okay. However, I now can't make a VNC connection to the ubuntu box using Ultra VNC (as per Glider's guide). Putty is just fine but Ultra VNC moans about some sort of incompatability issues. It used to work fine :(.

    UPDATE 2 - ARHHGGGHH!!

I just plugged a monitor into the linux box to take a look at what was going on and basically it can't load the Xserver. It states some sort of problem with the driver, gpu or Xorg. This is definitely beyond my level of linux knowledge now, really need some help.

    UPDATE 3 - PHEW!

Used nano to edit the xorg.conf and changed the 'nvidia' driver to 'vesa'. Seems to have got me a working xserver and now my VNC works again. I would however, like to install the latest driver sucessfully so still looking for suggestions.

I use Ubuntu, and found that one of their forum members had produced a nice "auto install" script for both Nvidia & Ati video drivers.

    Get it from http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

I've been using it for about a year now with constant success.
Remember, your video drivers are built against your system's existing kernel. If the kernel is updated the video drivers must be reinstalled!

If youre only using your box as a headless node there is no need for the nvidia drivers...
