I've got a wonderful old PII that I want to get Linux on. The trouble is, the thing doesn't have CD-rom drivers on the motherboard. Both of the two times I've had to re-install Windows (98, in case you were wondering), I've had to start it with a boot floppy. So, any thoughts? Could I get it to work in the system? Would it be easier to put the hard drive into a different computer and install it from there? Or, would it be easier to just get a more modern setup?

A lot of Linux distros offer a bootable floppy image to download, which can start the installer. The Debian one is good, I've not really tried floppy booting any other distros.

    what mobo chipset?

my 440bx board always booted from cd just fine after i enabled it in the bios ...

failing that, i'm sure that you can get bootable floppies or a usb drive image ...

maybe even try a knoppix disc? i've had knoppix boot on a computer that wouldnt boot other supposedly bootable cd's ...

Got it up and running FC3... It turns out that it could boot from a CD, after some BIOS tweaking.

    Thanks for all the help.
