so i have this new laptop. samsung r560. Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5GHz Dual-Core RAM - 4 GB Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Screen - 15.4 in 1280 x 800 Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 some specs. so im a bit fed up with vista and wanted to go back with windows 2000 agian since i mostly do school work on the laptop. the drivers on the samsung website only have for vista and xp. was wondering if i can use the xp drivers for windows2000 or is there any other option. thanks in advance
You could try the XP drivers, after all, it works the other way round so why not the other way roud aswell? But it could be that they use some API calls that are not present in 2000. But it's worth trying, nothing to lose. You will propably have problems with SATA aswell. Also, as Ghys asked, why not just XP? And, what's wrong with Vista?
well, i don't know why but my vista crashes a lot on my new laptop, i haven't installed much on it , so im bit pissed with it. thought switching back to 2000 just for the purpose of fun. but probably i will go with xp if 2000 doesn't work
Well that's pretty true, but one must remember that XP is from 2001, that ain't much better either. And hotfixes for Win2000 are still being developed, so there shouldn't be much problems. OP: I'd say just try Windows 2000, and if you get problems, just get XP on it. Hmm I'm thinking of trying Windows NT 4.0 on my computer. Just for fun. And I'd also like to check how well/bad it runs on a quad core and 8GB of memory (it's not going to utilize it all because of 32-bit limitations but 4 gigs is propably enough).
Why not use XP SP2? I mean seriously? Does 2000 even have directx 9? Most XP drivers have some API calls, that 2000 doesnt/wont support Go for XP or Windows for Workstations, or try Win7 RC1
Yep 2000 has DX9... and you can get 2000 to support XP-only API calls: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=120936
If you haven't already wiped Vista off, try going into the bios and either switch multicore processor support off or alter the settings so the fans are always on and see if it still crashes. I had an issue with a Dell Vostro that would only run with one effective cpu. Btw, if running without multicore support 'fixes' it, get it replaced or refunded.
oh god vista on one core... i hate that... But yeah... Do that... and dx9 wasnt out on 98... maybe dx8 or 7, but not dx9
If its crashing on the time, first delete all the bloatware that it came with. If that doesn't fix it, take it back to the shop and get a replacement.
No, Windows 95 topped out at Dx8.0a, whereas 98 and ME supported Dx9.0. As its all unsupported by Microsoft these days anyway you'll be hard pushed to find much detail on the internet about it, but there's evidence out there confirming it. Some people don't quite realise exactly how old 9.0 was!
Shoulda thought of Wikipedia. If its random seemingly useless information it will be on there! /me waves at kenco_uk
As you note, your article states that DX9.0c with that specific version code was exclusive for Windows XP, however two lines down .... My emphasis added in bold. Not that it really matters as no-one in their sane mind would try and run games on Win 98 SE these days, except for a bit of retro gaming, due to absolute lack of driver support in any gfx card!!
