Well, I do happen to be horrible with numbers. That is an interesting note, though; haven't heard anything like that since the 9/9/99 release of the Dreamcast. I'd imagine that whoever selected that release date (be it a media speculator or someone at Apple themselves) noticed that. Then again, we all know that's the true release date for Windows Vista. :p

Just a question thats boggled my mind ever since Mac announced it's gradual move to intel chips. Now if the Mac's running off an Intel Processor most likely the Yonah 65nm Core Duo. Is it possible for me to purchase a Mac machine reformat the HD and install a MS OS such as the Vista when it ships. The reason I ask this is because I've always believed that Mac makes the most reliable hardware when it comes computing but I've never liked the Mac OS for various reasons. Now don't think I'd ever purchase a Mac for the one reason because of the Mac's OS, now that Mac's are switching over the intel cores I am considering switching over to Mac for all future hardware upgrades but the question is will Mactel based systems support MS OS?

As I recall from some of the earlier comments, the answer is yes, that the arcitecture for the x86-based Macs would indeed be similar enough to standard x86 machines that it would be able to use at least Linux, if not Windows. However, apparently the reverse in compatability might not be possible, in that Mac OS would be extremely picky in its hardware. Then again, I may simply be mistaken; this information was from the summer, when the move was first announced, and much has happened since then.

So the reason why you like makes is the hardware they use? But you wont buy one as you dont like mac os?
Since mactels are not using the traditional ppc hardware then you first point is no longer valid, as unless apple go tinkering you're likely to be able to buy a pc with near enough identical hardware... and as you dont like osx you may aswell stick with windows/linux?

I'm confused... i guess i should really go to bed :/

LOL I know it's hard to understand, so let me explain, Macs today aside from CPU and MOBO use third party hardware even for there Powerbooks and G5s. But it is an almost proven fact that Mac spends more money and time to design the way the hardware is structured within there chassis, example a Mac Powerbook is less likely to have hardware issues such as broken speakers, broken roms drives, broken CPU fans, parts overheating and so and so fourth. Now I've worked through two Notebooks and is about to switch to my third, both my previous notebooks one a Dell and the other a Toshiba have had numerous hardware issues through it's lifespan while a friend of mine has had a Mac for almost three years and has yet to see a single problem. This leads to my conclusion that because Mac values reliability over cheap production and quantity they produce the best assembled key word here is ASSEMBLED hardware. They seem to spend the time to pick all the best parts from HD, to MOBO, to Fan, and etc, and they seem to produce the best physical configuration for all their internal structures on there Mobile units such as the Powerbook or Ibook. For this reason I have always wanted to purchase a Mac BUILT Notebook knowing that I'm getting the best for my money in terms of design and reliability.
It's production of assembly and internal design that I'm looking for, have you ever noticed a Mac notebook always feels sturdier and less Mickey Mouse than it's PC counter part. There's a reason for that.
So if I can finally use my trusty MS OS on a Mac built machine then I'll be glad to make the switch and there a lot of people who feel the same way as I do.

i wasnt going to post in this thread again but...
at work we have 4 dell portable type lappies and about 6 of the larger desktop replacements aswell as 2 g4 powerbooks
1 dell portable had to have its mobo replaced becaus someone stood on it and after that the nic wouldnt work, this took about 15mins for hte dell guy to do onsite
both powerbooks died within 1 year, just completely dead wouldnt power on nothing, thye had to go back to apple to be replaced

we have probably about 50 dell workstations maybe more, of varying model from low-end celerons to high end p4 workstations
none of these had have any problems more ram didnt fix
the 1 g4 powermac we had blew its psu and the screen died (apple wanted £500 to replace a 17" tft that would cost £600 to buy new from them or £350 for an equivilent non-apple one)
we bought 10 emacs to become the main machines for a 'media workshop' (i told them this was a bad idea but no-one listens to me :p)
2 were DoA, 3 more died within a week

this is my experience with apples so called 'perfect engineering' and high standards of reliability
i think ill stick to dell or ibm for laptops and custom built desktops

Wow thanks for the headsup maybe Macs are over rated.

Ya think?! It's a bit like all Apples stuff, especially the ipod, its unbelievebly over rated yet is still a huge hit!

I'm not saying their stuff isn't nice and of a high standard - in the most part it is, but their reputation as a 'cool' company is easily their key asset and in the consumers eye just having an apple product is more than enough to make up for the products flaws. Without it I can't imagine them surviving too long in such a competitive industry.

BTW Santa, if you're listening, for christmas I want a couple of those Apple 23" TFTs like the ones I saw in the Apple store. That will be all.
